Objective: Read a Time Zone map **New seats on door!! Bellwork: Complete the sentences 1.) Tell me how you think you did on yesterday’s quiz. 2.) Tell me why you think you performed that way. Quiz results will be handed back tomorrow.

Time Zones

Hmmm…. Several months ago, I bought a plane ticket to North Carolina. I left Nashville, TN at 7:30pm and arrived in Raleigh, NC at 10:00pm. When I came back home, I left Raleigh, NC at 4:00pm and arrived back in Nashville, TN at 4:30pm. How is this possible?

The answer is….. Time Zones!! Because of the earth’s rotation, different parts of the earth are facing the sun at any given time. To help eliminate confusion, time zones were set up so that the sun is at its highest point in the sky around 12:00pm, or noon.

NIGHTFALL IN USA 9:30pm Eastern Time 8:30pm Central Time 7:30pm Mountain Time 6:30pm Pacific Time

Time Zone maps Time zone maps might look complicated but they are very easy to read. There is just one rule to remember: If you want to find out the time in a city to the east, you must add hours. If you want to find out the time in a city to the west, you must subtract hours.

NIGHTFALL IN USA 9:30pm Eastern Time 8:30pm Central Time 7:30pm Mountain Time 6:30pm Pacific Time Cities to the East are later in the day. So you must add hours to get their time.

Time Zones Look on page H9 in your textbook. If it is 4:00pm in Atlanta, what time is it in: Oklahoma City? Denver? San Francisco?
