Using Time Zones

2. Objective
To use logical reasoning to solve problems involving time zones.
Why? To know what time it is in different parts of the USA. To make phone calls at the correct times.

4. Standard time zones Daylight Saving Time
The Earth is divided in 24 time zones. Each zone runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. Time zones are related to lines of longitude. One hour is about the same as 15° of longitude.
The USA has 6 time zones. The 4 major time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific. Alaska and Hawaii are the two other zones.
11 states have two time zones, such as Oregon, Texas, and Florida.
Each time zone has a one-hour difference from its neighboring zones.
The hours are earlier in the east than the west. Subtract the hours if the time zone is west of you.
Daylight Saving Time
In the spring, we add 1 hour.
In the fall, we lose 1 hour.
Some states do not participate, such as Arizona.

5. How to Solve Problems Involving Time Zones
1) Read and comprehend what the problem is asking you to solve. 2) Use a map, if needed, to know where each location is located and in what time zone. 3) Figure out the number of time zones from one location to the other. 4) Add or subtract from and/or flying times. Remember to ‘count’ in “clock time”

8 + 4 = 12 hours
9 AM + 12 hrs = 9 PM

11 PM → 1:50 AM = 50 minutes and 1 hours
1 hr, 50 min + 4 zones =
5 hours, 50 min
Flight = 5 hrs, 50 min

= 4:40 AM
