Canada’s Time Zones

Why do we have them? Time zones were developed to help people keep time around the world in an organized fashion so that anyone could figure out what time it was half way around the world. This allowed modern transportation to keep accurate schedules for arrivals and departures when traveling over long distances

There are 24 time zones going around the world, one time zone for every hour of the day, each one is 15° of longitude wide. Time only changes as you move EAST and WEST of a location – NOT going North and South.

Time Zones in Canada Because Canada is such a large country, we have 6 time zones! Each of our time zones has a name. Pacific Mountain Central Eastern Atlantic Newfoundland Prime Ministers Can’t Eat Any Nachos

There is one hour’s difference between each time zone, EXCEPT for between Atlantic and Newfoundland time where the difference is only a half hour (30 minutes).

Remembering that the east gets the sun first, it will always be later in the day in Eastern Canada.
If it is 1:10 PM in Toronto (Eastern Time) then it is _________in Halifax (Atlantic) and _________in St. John’s (Newfoundland) It would be _______(noon) in Winnipeg (Central) _________in Calgary (Mountain) and __________in Vancouver (Pacific). 2:10 PM 2:40 PM 12:10 PM 11:10 AM 10:10 AM

Time to Label your Map! Draw in all of the time zones on your map of Canada’s Provinces and Territories Label each time zone
