Determining Graduates, Non-Graduates and Dropouts April 12, 2011 Jane A. Russo, Superintendent Cathie Olsky, Ed.D., Deputy Superintendent

2010 implementation of Aeries Student Information System We now have the ability to identify every student entering and exiting the school district As a result, we did the following: –Met with all of the high school Principals and Assistant Principals (AP) to address the goal of graduation –Shared the roles and responsibilities of the AP and Registrar –Provided professional development on proper State coding –Required each high school to provide evidence for all of their exits and graduates –District office staff visited each school to verify their process –Reviewed all evidence at the district office 2

The Focus of Today’s Presentation The way SAUSD monitors students’ entries and exits The number of high school students who entered and exited SAUSD from The categories and explanation for all exits: graduates, non-graduates, and dropouts The analysis SAUSD conducts in comparison to CDE’s graduation calculations 3

GRADE 9 in 2007: 4,837 students GRADE 10: 266 new students GRADE 11: 369 new students GRADE 12: 430 new students + 1,065 new students 313 re-enrollees 4

Graduate Definition: Students who completed all graduation requirements and earned a high school diploma or earned a GED or CHSPE Example: Student earned 220 credits, passed CAHSEE and completed all other graduation requirements The Three Types of Exits Non-Graduate Definition: Students who leave high school to attend another high school, alternative program, or leave for a specific reason. Example: Student who passed away, exited school for medical issues, enrolled in a program leading to a diploma, earned a special education certificate of achievement, transferred to another school Dropout Definition: Students who were enrolled in grades 7-12 at some time during the school year AND left prior to completing the year OR Successfully completed the previous school year, but did not begin attending the next grade level AND No record of enrollment as of CBEDS Information Day (October) Example: No show, credit deficient, non- CAHSEE passer 5

Non-graduate is NOT the same as a dropout 6

Examples GraduateNon-GraduateDrop Out Student A completes all course requirements and passes CAHSEE. Student B is a dropout in grade 10, returns in grade 11,and earns a diploma in grade 12. Student C passes the GED or California High School Proficiency Exam. Student D is special education, met all course requirements and received a CAHSEE Exemption. Student E attends SAUSD and then moved to another CA district. The student’s cumulative file is requested by the parent AND the student enrolls in the other school. Student E’s cumulative file is requested by another school AND the student does NOT show up to the other school. Student F is special education with a modified curriculum and receives a special education certificate of achievement. Student G completes all required coursework, but does not pass the CAHSEE 7

Dropouts: 439 students Failed CAHSEE Didn’t meet credit requirement No show Transfer to adult education and dropped Jail, Military-over age 18 Non-Graduates: 2,217 students Special Education Certificate of Achievement Died Medical Reason Transfer to another school Transfer out of the country Transfer to college Transfer to a health facility Military/Jail-under age 18, Home School Graduates: 2,781 students Diploma Special Education CAHSEE Exemption Adult Education HS Diploma GED CHSPE 4,837 9 th grade students in Students may be in more than one category so totals won’t add up.
