Why do medicines and drugs have different effects on different people?

Drugs – substances other than food that change the structure or function of the body or mind. Medicines – drugs that are used to treat or prevent disease or other conditions.

Vaccine – preparation introduced into the body to stimulate an immune response Side effects – reactions to medicine other than the one intended

Tolerance – condition in which the body becomes used to the effect of a medicine Withdrawal – occurs when a person stops using something that they have a chemical dependence for

 Failing to follow instructions from Dr. or package  Giving a prescription med. to a person for whom it was not prescribed  Taking someone else's prescription  Mixing medications

 Discontinuing use without informing your Dr.  Taking too much or too little of a medication  Taking a medication for shorter or longer than prescribed

Abuse is…  Taking medicines to lose weight  Taking medicines to stay awake.  Taking someone else’s prescription.  Using OTC or Prescription medicine at pill parties. Medicine Abuse – intentionally taking medicines for non-medical reasons.

Physical Once a drug enters the bloodstream, it can harm a person’s brain, heart, lungs, and other vital organs. Mental/ Emotional Drugs cloud reasoning and thinking and users lose control of their behavior.

Overdose – strong sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug Tolerance – when the body of a user needs more and more of the drug to get the same effect.
