OUTLINING INGL3202

What will we be writing?  At the end of this process you should end up with a five paragraph essay.  Your essay should be 500 words long.

Outline- The skeleton of your essay.  There is no specific way you must follow to put your outline together.  Complete sentences  Topics and phrases  The outline serves to ORGANIZE your ideas.  Creating an outline saves you time, later, in the writing process.

Basic Essay Outline

Introduction  You use the introduction to welcome the reader into your writing.  Hook- reader grabber.  State your thesis statement and subtopics.

Body Paragraphs  The number of paragraphs in the body of your essay will be defined by the number of subtopics for your thesis statement.  For each subtopic (each paragraph) you will add from 3-4 details.

Conclusion  This is the closing of your essay. You want to let the reader know that you are done talking.  You may re-state your ideas. (highly recommended)  In the conclusion you state your final opinion.  You DO NOT introduce a new topic at the end of your essay.

WRITING TIP When writing, avoid the shotgun technique, but instead use the laser gun technique. Scattered ideas Right to the point
