Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera The Creative Couple of the Art World

Diego Rivera born in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1886 Moved to Europe, studied in Paris (“was searching for a new form of painting, one that could express the complexities of his day and still reach a wide audience”)

fresco Found new inspiration in Italy when he saw the “frescoes” - a painting done rapidly in watercolor on wet plaster on a wall or ceiling, so that the colors penetrate the plaster and become fixed as it dries.

What was Diego Rivera expressing? Painting themes included history and technological progress, as well as his socialist political views His paintings changed American art

Diego & Detroit Murals 1930s- Depression, two ideals clashing (American democracy and communism) Controversy!!! – Many didn't like Rivera for who he was: an avowed communist and foreigner. Diego’s inspiration: A car guy? "Henry Ford (is) a true poet and artist, one of the greatest in the world," Rivera said shortly before he arrived in Detroit, according to press accounts. "Rivera reached a level of understanding about himself, his work and the world that is reflected in the Detroit murals and that does not appear in any of his work before and after," said Linda Downs, author of "Diego Rivera: The Detroit Industry Murals," adding that it is a "monumental modern work." Frida Kahlo July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954 "High society here turns me off and I feel bit of rage against all these rich guys here, since I have seen thousands of people in the most terrible misery," Kahlo wrote in She deplored the open racism toward blacks, which she described as "medievalism." While in Detroit, she suffered a miscarriage at Henry Ford Hospital, and her mother died in Mexico. That drove her to produce what critics contend are her first great works of art — a mix of her inner emotions and specific imagery of the city. One of Kahlo's most famous paintings is titled "Self Portrait Standing on the Border Between Mexico and the United States." The small painting combines the Ford Rouge plant, Mexican ruins and her inner landscape. From The Detroit News: 01/ #ixzz2iM8o6scm 01/ #ixzz2iM8o6scm

Painted with Pain Bus accident as a teenager left her spine crooked and in constant pain Over half of her paintings are self portraits- showing her physical and emotional pain, much of which is due to her turbulent relationship with her husband Diego Rivera "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.“
