4 Frida Kahlo Having watched all/part of the film ‘Frida’ choose ONE of her paintings and use the information to analyse the piece. Take into consideration the many things that happened to her during her life and explain how they could have influenced her. ( You should also use books and online information ) You should include information on: ●Title (Name of image, you can also include the date and medium, does the title describe the image) ●Theme (Is there an overall feeling/mood, and how is it created) ●Contents (What is the image about, describe what is in the picture, is it realistic/abstract, was anything happening in the world at the time it was created) ●Formal Elements (Describe the way that Kahlo uses lines, tones, colours, shapes, textures and patterns to create effects) ●Personal Feelings (How does the image make you feel, what, why, how)

5 “ Henry Ford Hospital ” Oil on metal 32.5 x 40.2 cm, 1932 Contents: A woman -Frida Blood Tear Pregnant Belly Hospital Bed Snail Foetus Womb Pelvis Flower Machinery Industrial Development Ribbons Themes: Sadness Desire Attachment Loss Longing Personal Feelings: When I look at this image I see a woman lay on a hospital bed in a pool of blood, she clasps ribbon like veins holding onto the feotus that she has lost… The image creates a sense of loss and misery with the use of a single tear drop falling from her (Frida) eye and… I think that this painting expresses her attachment and want for her own child and the conflict caused by her body….

6 What Have YOU Learnt? How did events in her life affect her work? Why does she create almost dream like (Surrealist) images? What makes them appear Surreal? How do the objects inside her paintings reflect an event in her life? HOW? Do you like her work? Why/Why not? As an Artist do you think she achieved her goals?
