Frida Kahlo (1907 - 1954) Considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists
Famous for self-portraits and depicting pain and emotion in a surrealistic manner She did not consider herself a surrealist, even though she was influenced by the movement and had friends who were part of it Survived polio as a child, and had a limp from the disease Severely injured in a bus accident as a young woman Many of her self-portraits show the physical pain she endured for the rest of her life Married famous Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera They divorced for about a year, then remarried in 1940

Symbolizes her emotional pain during her divorce from Rivera It is the Kahlo in traditional Mexican dress (right) that holds a locket with an image of Rivera.
