OBJECTIVES To increase awareness of the materials available from the WiPP website – Self Care for People Project To develop an understanding of how the training manuals can be used To consider SCSTC as a cost efficient way of managing workloads To understand the staged process for implementing the SCST courses To gather ideas on building capacity to run courses within own organisation

Self Care for People – Integrated Documents Self Care for Trainers Training the Trainers Self Care Skills Training Course Training Manuals

Self Care for People Skills Training Course (SCSTC) Flexible training course – 9 hours – peer led 6 activities (1 hr 30 mins) Self care self empowerment – health belief model Motivation and behavioural change Social aspects of health – self esteem and confidence building Psychological aspects of health – stress and anxiety management Physical aspects of health – healthy eating and exercise Managing conditions and sign- posting Reviews x 3 Self Care Skills Training Course

Training Package for SCS Trainers Ideally trainers will have completed the SCST course as a participant Will undertake 2, 3 or 5 day training, depending on experience and qualifications Upon successful completion will have a comprehensive training package to cascade SCST course to others Training Manuals

Training The Trainers – 2/3 days training  Role of trainers  Identification of individual needs  Self development – Johari Window – communication skills (Egan & Rogers)  Review of six activities – management of Power Points  Conducting and analysing assessments (self esteem, self care and anxiety scores)  Risk assessment and confidentiality  Future planning and preparation for teaching Training the Trainers

WHO SHOULD FACILITATE SELF CARE COURSES?

At the Citizen’s Summit, 33% said they thought support for self care should come from a trained peer. Our Health, our care, our say… 33% How can we do that?

DOES SELF CARE BUILD CAPACITY?

GP Survey: is too much being asked of General Practice? ¹

86% thought professionals in their local GP practice should provide more support to help them manage their own health and well-being³ 86% Our Health, our care, our say… How can we do that??

Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (2001) Prevalence of depression 26% - 36%. Stress and Anxiety higher. Of these - 75% present to the GP. Of these, only 50% recognised as 80% present to GP with somatisation. Of these only 37.5% will be diagnosed and offered a treatment plan. 62.5% will be left to take care of themselves and are highly likely to return to GP for further consultations EXAMPLE WORKLOAD MANAGEMENT

WORKLOAD MANAGEMENT In Practice GP population of 10,000 Prevalence of depression 26% - 36%. Stress and Anxiety higher. 2,600 – 3,600 pts Of these - 75% present to the GP. 1,950 – 2,700 pts Of these, only 50% recognised as 80% present to GP with somatisation. 945 – 1,320 pts Of these only 37.5% will be diagnosed and offered a treatment plan. 62.5% will be left to take care of themselves 591 – 825 pts Majority will return to GP for further consultations

IS THE SELF CARE SKILLS TRAINING COURSE COST EFFECTIVE?

COURSE COSTS SCSTC – run over 6 weeks (20 courses per year) based on 15 people attending each course = £34.38 per course participant SCSTC – run over 3 weeks (20 courses per year) based on 15 people attending each course = £26 per course participant IN COMPARISON Sick leave costs in the UK are around £1.75 billion – accounting 176 million days off per year averaging 6.8 days per employee
