11 www.beyondblue.org.au THE INTERVENTION : LOW INTENSITY CBT (LiCBT) Cognitive and behavioural therapies are both forms of psychotherapy (a psychological approach to treatment) and are based on scientific principles that help people change they way they think, feel and behave. Behavioural therapy seeks to change learned responses to particular circumstance that are harmful and unhelpful behaviours such as avoidance and withdrawal Cognitive therapy looks at how people think about situations, symptoms events in their lives and develop beliefs about themselves, others and the world. These ways of thinking (harmful, unhelpful or ‘false’ ideas and thoughts) are seen as triggers for mental and physical health problems. Cognitive behaviour therapy challenges these ways of thinking to produce more helpful and realistic thought patterns.
