How to diagram a sentence to diagram a sentence, you need to find the complete subject and complete predicate. Then divide them with a long slash between the two parts. Find the verb and underline it twice. Find the simple subject and underline it once. Then find the compliment and circle it. There are different kinds of compliments. There is predicate adjectives and nouns which comes with linking verbs. There is indirect objects and direct objects.

Irregular Sentences The irregular sentences include the question sentence, a command, a “Yoda” sentence, and the here/ there sentence. In a question, the subject comes between two verbs so you can not divide it. A “Yoda” sentence can’t be divided either because the compliment comes before the subject. A command there is a subject, but it is not in the sentence. This is known as an “understood you.” in a here/ there sentence, here and there cannot be the subject ever so the subject comes after the verb.

Complete subject/ predicate A complete subject is anything that comes before the verb in a regular sentence, and not an irregular sentence. A complete predicate is the verb and anything after the verb.

Sentence/run-on/fragment A regular sentence has two parts. A subject and predicate. A run-on has the two parts and two thoughts. It can make your writing confusing if not fixed and separated. A fragment does not have the two parts. It either has a subject or the predicate alone. In order to make a real sentence, you have to have both parts.
