The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act made the merit system common practice by promoting and hiring government employees based on their ability to perform a job, rather than on their political connections. The spoils systems is an unfair political practice the rewards the ‘cronies’ and supporters of winning candidate with jobs and special favors. While in office, Roosevelt became a "trust buster" by forcing the great railroad combination in the Northwest to break apart. IN THE SPACE PROVIDED HERE, DRAW A PICTURE OF THE WORD!

The early 20th century saw a rise in corruption as political machines accepted bribes and kickbacks and controlled cities using dishonest methods. IN THE SPACE PROVIDED HERE, DRAW A PICTURE OF THE WORD!

Civil Service    MY DEFINITION FOR THE WORD :   system that includes most government jobs (NOT elected positions, court system or military)   USE THE VOCABULARY WORD IN A SENTENCE. The Civil Service Reform Act is an 1883 federal law that established the United States Civil Service Commission. It eventually placed most federal employees on the merit system and marked the end of the so-called "spoils system." IN THE SPACE PROVIDED HERE, DRAW A PICTURE OF THE WORD!

During the 1920’s, Prohibition made it illegal to manufacture, import, export, sell or transport intoxicating beverages within the United States.
