3 Vocabulary  16th Amendment: the US can institute an income tax  17th Amendment: direct election of senators  18th Amendment: ban the sale and consumption of alcohol  19th Amendment: women’s right to vote  20th Amendment: presidency shall end on January 20 th  Clayton Anti-Trust Act: outlaw monopolies

4 Vocabulary  direct primary elections: candidates have to be elected before they can run  Division of Forestry: new division of the government to protect the forests and nature  Federal Reserve Act: granted authority to issue the US dollar  initiative, voter: voters can now go ahead and try to create a new law  Interstate Commerce Act: designed to regulate the railroad industry and end corruption

5 Vocabulary  Meat Inspection Act: regulated the meat industry after The Jungle  National Reclamation Act: regulated and demanded receipts for land sold by the US  National Park System: created parks for the people of the US  Pendleton Civil Service Act: gov’t jobs are now awarded based on merit (ability)  Pure Food & Drug Act: regulated the meat industry to insure that it was quality food being produced  recall, voter: voters can now take an elected official out of office

6 Vocabulary  referendum, voter: voters can decide whether a bill or amendment is passed  Sherman Anti-Trust Act: regulated monopolies  Workingman’s Compensation Act: If you are hurt at work, you have to be compensated (paid)

7 Women’s Rights  While African Americans were given the right to vote and become citizens with the 14 th and 15 th Amendment, women STILL don’t have the right to vote at this time!  Women are angry about this and become adamant about getting the right to vote!
