Literary Devices in Pop Culture

What is a literary device?  Any literary or linguistic technique that produces a specific effect.

What are some literary devices with which we are familiar?

Why is it important to know literary devices?  They’re in the books we read, the movies we watch, and the music we listen to. Sometimes they even weasel their way into our everyday language.  Don’t believe me?  Video Time.

Assignment  In a group of no more than 4:  Use your knowledge of music and your technology to find an example of the following literary terms in the music we listen to today: SimileMetaphor OnomatopoeiaImagery IdiomHyperbole AlliterationAllusion PersonificationRepetition **Please make sure your examples are school appropriate**

For Extra Credit  Make your own video like the two shown in class today.  You must: 1. Have at least 5 different literary terms with the definition of each. 2. Provide the lyrics for the part of the song you are focusing on 3. Explain WHY the artist chose that device (what’s the purpose? what is he/she comparing? why is that important?).
