Research and evidence based design has been set as a high priority by AIA National. Over the past several years, Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) has both conducted pragmatic research in senior living environments and prepared a “Senior Research Resource Guide.” The intent of the guide is to provide a common and easily accessed resource for clients, care providers, architects and lay-people as they are considering designs of environments for seniors. In collaboration with the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community, the Hulda B. and Maurice L Rothschild Foundation, Vendome Publishing and our own EUA Charitable Foundation we are undertaking the publication and distribution of this guide for wide usage, understanding that the work we’ve done should be available for anyone interested in senior living environments. This presentation will provide a brief introduction to the AIA research initiative, including a bit of “download” from the two research summits that have been held and then an overview of how that initiative can be applied to real-world practical research evidenced by the Senior Research Resource Guide. Course Description

Learning Objectives 1. Gain a background understanding of the National AIA research initiative 2. Learn how practitioners can utilize research to benefit their designs and their clients’ programs 3. Learn how to undertake practical research within the business model of today’s architectural firm 4. Learn how one’s client can benefit from and capitalize on research which has been completed and from applied evidence based design and how this research may streamline the design process At the end of the this course, participants will be able to:
