1 CEFPI is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES). Credit(s) earned on completion of this program will be reported to AIA/CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-AIA members are available upon request. This program is registered with AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of each presentation.

2 Learning Objectives Brain Development and Learning in the Middle School Years At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the current state of science regarding brain development and psychological changes in middle school age children. 2.Understand the relationship between neurological and psychological development and effective learning strategies for middle school students. 3.Discover the potential ramifications for designing middle school buildings and sites which can effectively support the learning program. 4. Understand potential advantages of accommodating a variety of group sizes and the potential for movement in designs of middle schools.

3 Learning Objectives Tour of Meadowdale Middle School At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the key questions which informed the design. 2.Explore the innovative relationships between the building elements and a reconceived educational program. 3.Learn about the building’s sustainable design features, including energy- saving HVAC and stormwater strategies.. 4. Understand the planning process adopted to ensure sustainability and comfort at many different levels for the new facility

4 Learning Objectives Energy Efficiency at Schools in Western Washington At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Examine actual energy use data from 150 schools in 15 districts throughout western Washington. 2.Discover patterns in the large data set which point to the influence of historical factors such as ventilation codes, construction types and use and see how these factors affect energy use in schools. 3.Learn about current efforts by School Districts to address energy use in schools. 4. Understand best practices, codes, costs and incentives which can influence new school building designs for future energy savings.

5 Learning Objectives Effective Curricula for the Emerging Adolescent At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the biggest challenges and opportunities in helping middle school students learn and be successful. 2.Understand middle school curricula which contribute to student success, including discussion of beneficial teaching strategies, student activities and group sizes for students at this age. 3.Investigate how effective teacher strategies and student activities can be supported by facility design. 4. Hear lessons learned in implementing innovative curricula in existing and new buildings.

6 Learning Objectives Aspects of Middle School Design At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Understand how to apply current knowledge of brain development and effective learning strategies to school planning and design. 2.Explore several types of spaces which are most effective for middle school learning and socialization. 3.Consider design and monitoring solutions that are particularly effective for middle schools. 4. Investigate possible solutions to accommodate the various perspectives presented, maximizing opportunities.
