Chapter 11 Getting Experience

Objective  To give students experience in writing a personal resume

Vocabulary 1.principles: a basic belief or idea 2.publication: a published work 3.resume: summary of a person’s professional or work experience 4.summary: an abridgment of something 5.original: not a copy or reproduction

6.chronological: listed in the order of time elapsed 7.honesty: dealing only in the truth 8.references: someone who can answer questions regarding your character or ability 9.draft: a preliminary version; make a rough sketch 10.polite: courteous; respectful

11.impression: a striking perception 12.vaccination: inoculating someone so as to create an immunity to something 13.misdemeanor: a crime that is not as serious as a felony 14.felony: under federal law, a crime that is punishable by death or imprisonment for more than one year 15.appropriate: fitting; suitable given the circumstances

 A “functional” resume is  A resume in which your experience is listed by the major skills you’ve used rather than by individual jobs  It’s a good idea to let your friends and family know what kind of job you are looking for in case one of them can refer you for an opening.

 Social media can help or hurt your job search depending on what you post  The best way to find a job is  Find companies you’d like to work for and contact them directly  the following is appropriate to do at a job interview  Ask questions about the position

 avoid doing the following at an informational interview  Asking for a job  Staying as long as it takes to get your questions answered A person who gives you advice and encouragement and “shows you the ropes” would be considered a mentor
