Tracker 2 Cryo &Electronics Update Linda Coney, UC Riverside Terry Hart, U Mississippi Ben Freemire, IIT Malcolm Ellis, Brunel University ADB MICE Collaboration Meeting, January 2009: Harbin, China

Tracker 2 Cryo Cryostats 3 and 4 are now both working to specification. Problems with #3 were related to thermal links and were solved by persistence –Make and remake connections “It’s not Rocket Science – It’s Harder

Tracker2 Readout System Two cryostats –Each powered by new Wiener power supply Each cryostat has 2 VLPC cassettes Each VLPC cassette has 2 AFE IIt boards  total of 8 AFE boards In rack: –9 VLSB modules: 1 master to control timing and 8 slaves (one for each AFE board) –1553 module: controls AFE initialization, bias voltage controls, temp controls, data taking –Fanout: sends correct timing signal to all AFE boards Goals:Goals: –characterize VLPC cassettes –get everything working correctly together in layout to be used at RAL

Cassette Characterization DONE Took data with LED pulser to determine correct bias voltage for each VLPC cassette Cryostat #4 –Cassette 102  –Cassette 110  Cryostat #3 –Cassette 109  –Cassette 104 

To Do List: Fix problems on spare AFE boards  Update firmware on 8 spare VLSBs  Update firmware on 8 spare AFE boards  Installation of Wiener power supplies  Run Wieners from desktop  –Install software at DAB  –Determine correct voltages  –Find better long term solution for remote operation of Wieners… Take data with new PSs running 

ToDo List Continued: Test spare VLSBs  –Problems with 3 – being fixed at FNAL Test bottom port of 1553 , but.. –Problems with 1553 –Currently troubleshooting the 1553s –Consulting w/DØ experts who have possible solution Test spare 1553  –Working as of Monday 12 January Test full electronics setup: *** –4 cassettes, 8 AFE boards, 1 master VLSB, 8 slave VLSBs, full 1553 –Did this on Friday for the first time! –Data looks good – took 10,000 events worth of data

Cryostat Power Supply Control Currently monitor/control each Wiener separately –Only see one power supply at a time Need better long term solution for 4 power supplies on tracker system in MICE hall DØ has many Wieners for detector systems –Daisy chain power supplies together –Use CANBUS  VME converter –Controller software already exits, uses EPICS –GUI already exists for use in control room We will test this kind of system using spare DØ cables/modules and the controls software that they use –Our power supplies have the necessary connectors –Need make sure works on Windows system –Need make sure can power on/off remotely Possibility of using ethernet connection also exists –needs more investigation, controls software might be underdeveloped

Next Test spare AFE boards Test new method for remote monitor/control of power supplies using daisy chained Wieners and CANBUS interface Ship to RAL for installation in Lab 7 and cosmic ray test of Tracker2 –Tracker2 assembly starts this month –Lab7 infrastructure ready for cryo systems by end of January –Ship electronics end Jan/beginning Feb –Begin reassembly second week Feb Continue investigation of zero suppression? –There are questions as to whether or not this will work (reservations expressed by DØ experts) –Cosmics recommended as best way to test zero-suppression Make use of buffering on TripTs?

Conclusions Lots of progress since beginning of November –VLPC cassette characterization done –VLSB spares tested –Data successfully read out with full system including all 8 AFE boards – first time on Friday! Tracker2 readout testing will finish by end of January –System likely to RAL 2 nd week of Feb Begin reassembly of cryo and readout system February

In Other News… Look what’s coming our way in Illinois… Jan 12: Blizzard Watch, Blizzard Warning, Winter Weather Advisory in IL: Boone, Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, Will Mother Nature obviously wanted us to feel like a part of the collaboration meeting! Brrrr…. –Thursday Chicago will be colder than Harbin!
