Oral vs. Written Communication When we write an argument the focus is on the perception of the reader, or our own interpretation of what we have written. When we speak an argument the focus is not only on what we say but how it is expressed. The sophistication of the argument comes from both the words and the way the words are presented. The audiences for written and oral arguments might be the same, but the way they perceive the arguments might be different.

Oral Communication and Feedback Oral communication allows for an immediate response, or feedback, from the listener. Feedback takes a variety of forms: Eye contact Facial expressions Gestures Verbal responses

Oral Communication and Audience Reception Oral communication does not allow the audience to review the content. The message must be clear the first time: Appropriate rate of delivery Clarity in word choice Proper pronunciation and enunciation Structural cues to help the audience follow the logical order of the presentation

Delivery Verbal & Nonverbal Communication Verbal Communication: how we orally present the words we use. Non-Verbal Communication: how we use the human body to communicate.
