Innovation – A National Agenda Innovation is about: Creating new knowledge and bringing it to market quickly. Finding ways to develop, attract and retain the best and brightest. Creating the right conditions for investment, opportunity and research. Strengthening communities across Canada. »(Achieving Excellence-Investing in People, Knowledge and Opportunity – Canada’s Innovation Strategy)

Colleges Spur Innovation and Economic Development Conduct applied research for industry. Support technology transfer. Assist business with commercialization. Create new programs for the knowledge economy. Include applied research projects in college programs.

Colleges Spur Innovation and Economic Development Supply graduates who bring technology, research and problem solving skills to the workplace. Provide key support in the development of industrial clusters. Serve as the major technology and/or post- secondary education presence in many communities. Host business incubators.

Why Colleges Must Participate in Applied Research and Innovation Supports economic development. Enriches learner’s academic and workforce preparation. Supports national and provincial innovation strategies. Maximizes use of intellectual and physical resources by making them available to the community. Ensures program relevancy. Creates partnerships and collaborative networks between colleges, universities, industry and communities. Provides professional faculty development.

ResearchMission Research Mission Assume a leading role in the application of knowledge through directed applied research in specific areas of expertise. Enhance the connectivity between College expertise and the needs of industry, government and the community. Create an institutional climate of support for applied research. This includes involving faculty, staff and students in applied research by encouraging a spirit of inquiry in the curriculum and by creating more pathways into applied research.

ResearchMission Research Mission Educate the next generation of applied researchers, equipping them to assume leadership roles in their respective fields. Seek and enhance professional applied research partnerships with other colleges and universities and public and private enterprises to combine strengths and to provide further opportunities for the application of knowledge through applied research.

RRC Applied Research Progress Added innovation applied research to vision and mission. Established Applied Research Office and Director. Developed an internal AR fund. Acquired CFI Eligibility and first CFI grant. Added AR projects to curricula. Established research policies and framework. Created institutional AR plan. Developing a research culture. Constructing first research lab. Will pursue NSERC eligibility.

Mapping West Nile in Manitoba RRC faculty, graduates and co-op students from GIS program. Use GPS equipment and GIS software to map Culex Tarsalis habitat. Research study for Office of Chief Medical Offices for Health and Manitoba Health. Project expanded to include insitu larvaciding as well as mapping.
