Anne R. Kenney SCLD Annual Conference April 24-26, 2006 The Sum of its Parts: Consolidated Storage, Management, and Delivery Services

Ensuring Library Relevancy Begin with users ’ needs and values Speed, convenience, ease, full text, personal control, ubiquity, free, good enough Factor in academic constraints Space, resources, competing demands, new expectations and directions Understand that our values and theirs don ’ t always align Quality, authenticity, ownership, structure, tradition, intermediation, archiving “Libraries and search engines are trusted almost equally.” (OCLC, 2005)

Bottom Line: Selling our brand in a buyer’s market Demonstrate that the library can: Deliver the goods in all forms Reduce current and future costs Free up space Return on legacy investment Increase productivity Provide the competitive edge Individual libraries will not be able to do this alone. “We are in the supply business. What’s the demand?” Xin Li

What is Catalyst? An innovative and responsive library trust that supports scholarly endeavors A service that provides users with accelerated access to a rich and growing body of research content A means to reduce library costs through collective action A cutting edge digital library infrastructure

Who Benefits? Information Seekers Improved access to the combined holdings of major NYS research libraries Rapid and innovative document delivery service Multiple print and electronic access options to meet individual needs Future generations of users interested in legacy content Academic Institutions Expanding, shared collection in a state-of-the-art facility Meeting user’s need for deep scholarly content Freed up library stack space on center campus for other uses Savings on collection, preservation, facilities, and personnel costs

Shared Storage: State of the Art Three new high-density modules –4.8 million vol equivalent constructed in 2005 –Steady temperature of 50 F and relative humidity of 30% –Monitored by 3 different types of security measures

Redefine Library Holdings Acknowledge the continuing importance of print Consolidate materials for deep research across institutions Build trusted repository for key print resources, e.g., JSTOR Move beyond redundant ownership of individual items to joint ownership of whole collections Challenge the notion of a library’s standing defined by collection size Create pathways to future collection building and license arrangements

Expedited Access Integrate digital and print document delivery to the user –Unmediated borrowing –Physical delivery faster than ILL –PDF of print –PDF of microfilm –Print on demand delivery –Digitization on demand –On-site reading room with wireless access, computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and film scanners/readers

Reduce Costs Storage Stacks management Facilities Collection development Access Preservation Future possibilities –discovery, acquisition, processing, digitization, other key services

Catalyst Growth Model

Timeline and Contact Summer 2006 –Storage Service (leasing space and delivering customer’s own materials stored at Cornell’s facility) Summer 2006 – 2007: – Obtain Cornell University approval – Partner with 2-3 selected NYS academic libraries to develop Catalyst service model Governance Policies Overlap analysis Union catalog Delivery logistics Performance measurements and management tools Aim to make subscriptions available in summer or fall of 2007
