3 The Google Effect What is Happening – A new breed of students exist now – the computer age people – They use less and less the library and rely more and more on web search engines for research – Users also give up trying to use the library because it is just too complicated to understand – Web search engines are trying to add as much content as possible, but there is a small problem – they can’t reach it…

4 The Google Effect What Does That Mean to the User – Now most the information they find in their research is not reliable and many times wrong – When they by accident find an article the library has access to, they often are not able to access it, and if they are, they think the access is free – Users still give more importance to convenience than accuracy, because of this, the industry will adapt to them and not the other way around

5 The Google Effect What Does That Mean to the Library – Two main problems arise from this for the library: –Decline in circulation –Decline in recognition/appreciation for their service – These two problems directly affect the library’s ability to secure and increase their acquisitions budget – Initially libraries tried to fight this trend, but now are trying to benefit from it by: –Simplifying their services to match requirement of users –Integrate web engines into their resources
