Agenda OCLC vision WorldCat Local today Meta-search in WorldCat Local Questions
3
OCLC’s Vision Deliver library resources and services at point of need In a manner that users want and understand Using the aggregated resources of the world’s largest library cooperative Encourage users to participate in network and community of libraries by enabling them to re-use information and socialize around information Giving the user a local, group and global reach
4
First steps toward that vision Open WorldCat – Seed search engines with bibliographic data from WorldCat. Why? Make library materials findable on the open Web. WorldCat.org – Entire WorldCat catalog available to users as an openly available service on the Web. Why? Provide one place for users to find and get materials from local and global libraries. WorldCat Local – Custom view for individual libraries and systems, closing the gap between discovery and delivery. Why? Emphasize local holdings and make it easier for users to find and get to resources that make the most sense for them. WorldCat Local “quick start”- Core set of WorldCat Local features at no charge for WorldCat subscribers. Why? Help libraries take the first step toward Web-based, cooperative library management services.
5
Next step – Meta-search Available to libraries subscribing to WorldCat Local Goal is inclusion of all the library’s licensed and digital collections First a look at WorldCat Local today
6
Connects your users to local, regional, and global results through a single discovery and delivery experience WorldCat Local Today
7
The user view of WorldCat Local Without WorldCat Local, you need to search (at least): The local catalog A group catalog Databases WorldCat.org With WorldCat Local… one simple search box. Discovery
8
The user view of WorldCat Local Delivery Without WorldCat Local: With WorldCat Local… all the “Get It” options are in the initial results User sees 1 result on catalog Sees that book is on hold To get item, place “request” For ILL, go back to library homepage
9
Interoperates with existing library systems Integrated library system Consortial borrowing system Resource sharing system Link resolver
10
First step towards meta-search: One platform for OCLC electronic resources cccc
11
Meta-search beyond OCLC resources With Meta-search WorldCat Local libraries can extend single-search access with integrated relevancy-ranked search results beyond resources provided by OCLC This will lead to a true single search and delivery service for ALL of your library’s resources

Metasearch as it has existed Remote Database Metasearch Engine
13
Metasearch with WorldCat Local WorldCat with your library holdings OCLC Licensed Content Non-OCLC Licensed Content (Coming Soon) Non-OCLC Licensed Content (Coming Soon) Remote Database Central Index Remote Databases WorldCat Local
14
Network effect of the OCLC Cooperative Strength of the Cooperative enables partnering with publishers and database providers to obtain metadata for central indexing Central repository of database targets and connectors to non-indexed resources reduces overhead for all member libraries Capitalizes on networked ability to place discovery of library resources where the user is working
15
Meta-search in WorldCat Local Available to WorldCat Local subscribers only There is no additional subscription cost to WorldCat Local subscription Cooperative input to metasearch development Will add more centrally indexed and remotely searched databases regularly
