The Internet

Telnet Telnet means using your computer as a terminal. All commands you type are sent to the host computer you are connected to and executed there. You see the programs output on your local computer.

Telnet Features  login using a specific account and password  programs are run on the host computer  program output is seen on our own computer  interactive  costly  must know commands and programs available on the host.

How to telnet to the Unix System at JUST? From the Start menu: – choose Run – type telnet –click on the OK button. A window, similar to the one shown on the next slide, will open and ask you to type your login name and password.

Once you have entered your correct login information, the Unix prompt will be displayed signaling that the system is ready to accept your commands:

Pine Pine is a text-based and menu-driven mailing tool that is available free from the University of Washington. To run pine, type pine or 1 at the system prompt and then press the enter key. The next window shows pine main window:

Pine Main Menu Commands The Help option. The Compose Message option. Folder Index Folder List Address Book Setup Quit

The Help Option If you choose this option, either by typing ? or by highlighting the Help Option in the pine main menu, help information about pine will be displayed.

Compose Message (1)

Compose Message (2) This option is used to create and then send a new message. - You have to specify the receiver address in the To line. - The CC line is used to specify addresses of other secondary receivers of you message.

Compose Message (3) The Attachment line is used to specify the path and name of a file you want to attach to your message. Both the message and the file will be sent to address or addresses written in the To and CC lines.

Compose Message (4) Finally, the subject line is used to give your message a title. Now you are ready to type your text. When finished, press Crtl+X and your message will be sent to its destination.

Folder Index This option is used to view messages in your Inbox. When you choose this option, a list of messages stored in your Inbox will be displayed.

Folder Index To view the contents of any message, use the top and down arrows to reach to the required message and then press v.

Folder List This option is used to view the list of folders you have: Inbox: is used to store incoming messages sent-mail: is used to save a copy of every message sent out saved-messages: is used to store a copy of messages you want to save.

Folder List In addition to the previous three folders, users may create their own folders and save messages in them. The following window shows the window that will appear when you choose the Folder List option:

Address Book (1) The Address Book allows you to give names to addresses. Instead of remembering long addresses, you can give short and easy names to them.

Address Book (2) Another advantage of using the Address Book is that you can give a name to a group of addresses. For example, you can write the addresses of all your friends who like to play football and give this list a name like football.

Setup The setup option is used to configure or update pine. For example, you may use the setup command to define a printer as your default printer, or you could create a signature file that will be sent with every message you send out.

Quit Quit is used to exit pine. Pine will ask you whether you really want to quit pine? If you are sure then type Y (for yes), otherwise type N (for no).

Quit Also, pine will ask you whether you want to expunge deleted messages from you Inbox. Again, if you are sure, then type Y, otherwise type N. Note that pine (by default) will mark read messages as deleted ones.

Exit To exit from Unix system and loose to telnet connection, then at the Unix prompt type exit and hit the enter key.
