The Colonial Home Style and Purpose in the New World

Introduction You are a magazine designer in Colonial Times. Your magazine is about having a stylish home and life in Colonial Times. It’s kind of like HGTV for the New World! For your latest magazine cover, you will feature one remarkable piece of furniture, as well as headlines for your most important articles.

The Task At the computer, use the website to answer questions on the worksheet provided. Think about your partner roles. Each person must create 2 headlines for the magazine. You must collaborate on its title, price, and cover image. One person types and the other reads and navigates. Away from the computer, use a planning worksheet to make decisions about the cover. Back at the computer, use the website Big Huge Labs to create your magazine cover, and save it on Ms. Sirna’s thumb drive.

The Process, part 1 Assignment 1: Begin to understand the role of furniture and house wares in Colonial Times. Take a virtual visit to the Dewitt-Wallace Museum. Use the links below to navigate the website. Answer the questions on the worksheet. One person clicks, the other writes. The Process, part 2 Assignment 2: Create a plan for a Colonial Times home magazine using a planning worksheet. Collaborate with your partner to determine a title, cost, date, and choose a cover image. Each partner will independently contribute 2 tag lines. Each tag line must refer to one of the links you explored.

The Process, part 3 Assignment 3: Use the website Big Huge Labs to create a magazine cover featuring the information from your planning sheet. One partner should type, and the other should read the information. Save your finished magazine on Ms. Sirna’s thumb drive.Big Huge Labs

Evaluation A successful worksheet: Is turned in on time. Features complete, correct, legible answers. Shows that you used your brain, as well as the websites, to seek information. A successful magazine cover: Starts with a plan. Features supportive, readable, text (words) with correct spelling and grammar. Features interesting, appropriate, well-chosen images (pictures) Reflects objects and issues that were important during Colonial Times. Is saved on Ms. Sirna’s thumb drive as a finished project.
