3 What is researching? It means - study to learn and discover something new

4 Wading Through the Web What’s the difference between researching in a book and on the internet? Example Time it takes to do, Who writes it, True or False facts, easy or hard to find? Anyone can publish a Web page No one checks to see if the information is true or false There are millions of places to look for information Using the Internet is much quicker You can narrow down what you’re looking for more easily The Internet uses search engines A book has to be published by a publishing company Editors check and verify the information Looking for a book can be more time consuming You have to visit a library The library uses the Dewey Decimal System Both are viewed by millions of people each day

Click on the “e” for internet explorer Type in the address bar Type in what you are looking for in the search box.

10 Wading Through the Web Different Types of Search Engines What makes a site good for researching? Think like a detective…. Look at who runs the site with the facts. If it is a museum, university or library it can be trusted. Make a list in your head about someone you can trust for true information and someone who may give you false information with a partner. 2. Does it teach you something new or did you find what you were looking for. 3. It says where it got the information at the bottom (called references). Is the spelling correct and was it updated recently? Look at the evaluation sheet we will have to fill out one of these for the research project you will do next time. Go over what each specialist answers

Use words that Will help to find the information that you need. Be the detective and see if your facts are true and supported! Answer the 4 questions and fill out the evaluation sheet. Use a kid friendly and trusted search engine. Kidrex.org or Dibdabdoo.com Now you’re ready to start your own research project. Happy Internet searching!

13 Day 1 and part 2: All grades:
Go online and start researching using kidrex.org Fill out Evaluation sheet and determine if it is a good site. 3rd grade: Groups of Four. Each person choose a specialist role. Answer the questions and determine if it is a reliable site about living in one of the 13 colonies. 4th Grade: Groups of four, assign specialist roles and find one reliable site about one of the 5 pillars of Islam then write facts you find out that you will need for the project. Pilgrimage to Mecca, fasting, prayer, giving to the poor or needy, faith. 5th Grade: Groups of four, assign specialist roles and find 2 reliable sources about lewis and clark’s expedition westward. SHOW YOUR SHEET TO MR. Whitebread when it is complete.

14 4th Grade day 2 Work with your partners to find one reliable site about one of the 5 pillars of Islam. Kidrex.org 3. Fill out question sheets and show to Mr.Whitebread CHECK OFF what you have done on your task list. Begin creating a poster on MS Word about your pillar. LEVEL 2 (partner) voice level

15 5th Grade Day 2: Learn how to cite
Work in your group to find one reliable site about your topic. Kidrex.org 3. Fill out your question forms. Show to Mr. Whitebread 4. Begin writing your script for the show in MS word. Must be 1 minute long. Internet = author, “title of article”, date it was created, and address of website

16 Day 2: 3rd Grade Work with partners to find one trusted website about life in ONE of the 13 colonies. Fill out your question worksheets and show to Mr. Whitebread Begin typing on MS word your story about life in ONE of the 13 colonies. (see sheet for more details).

17 ` Remember to be the detective! Look for…. 1. Author- who wrote it
2. Date or newer 3. In-Depth- a lot of good information 4. Bias- does it take one side 5. Truthful- do you know that it is giving you correct information?

18 Cite your information! Didn’t you spell that word wrong? Cite= to give credit to the person that you got the information from Plagiarism vs summarizing How do I cite something? - Book= Author first and last name , name of book, year it was created (Rey, Arthur, Curious George, 2001) - Internet = author, “title of article”, date it was created, and address of website (PBS. “Curious George New Episode”, November 12, 2006, george )

19 Day 3: Grades 3-5 5th Grade: Learn how to film on the IPAD. Begin and finish taping your 1 minute IPAD film. - 4th Grade: Finish your poster and print it off. Learn how to cite. 3rd grade: Finish your story and print it off. Learn how to cite.
