Information Session Ste Anne – May 5 th – 7 th, 2008

Objectives §To provide an opportunity for students to be totally immersed in a French environment §awareness of the existence of French in other regions of the province §opportunity to integrate knowledge of the language §educational and enjoyable cultural experience

Cost §The cost is $ per student §two methods of payments l One full payment of $ on or before April 4 th, l Three payments of $65.00 dollars each on March 7 th, March 20 th, and April 4 th, l All cheques payable to:A.J.Smeltzer Junior High School

Additional/optional Costs §Campus store (souvenirs, t-shirts, etc.) l suggested max. of $40-$50, or debit card §Everything else is included in trip price (transportation by bus, lodging at the university, food, sports activities, entertainment, etc.)

Materials needed §We will be providing a check list in the next letter that will be going home.

Before we depart §Students will be asked to sign “french contracts” §students are asked to bring a bagged lunch for the trip §review rules

Some of the rules for students during the week of the trip: § All students are to speak French at all times. §If a student speaks English, privileges such as the swimming pool, gym, etc. could be taken away from her/him. Teachers will use their judgment in this situation. After two warnings the teacher and the student may call home and discuss the matter with her/his parents. Teachers also have the right to take away the student’s privilege to attend the dance. §All students must attend all scheduled functions. Students may not leave the university campus.

§The University is not responsible for stolen articles (so please don’t send expensive items). §As this trip is an official school activity, all school rules regarding such issues as appropriate behavior, language, and dress code are in effect for the duration of the trip.

Schedule §daily - rotation of activities in small groups §sports (tennis, intramurals, swimming, tournaments, etc.) §games §end of session dance

Tentative Itenerary – Day 1 §7h30:Arrive at AJ Smeltzer (Large luggage not permitted on School Bus) §8h300 : Depart Downsview Mall §11h30 :Arrive at Ste-Anne (Rooms, luggage, keys) §11h55 : Lunch in residence (Bagged Lunch) §13h00Meeting in the gym (Rules and Schedule explained) §13h30 :Rotation: Pool, Games, Nature Activity §16h30 : Free Time to unpack §16h45 :Dinner §18h00 :Journal §18h30 à 20h45: Rotations: Au Château, Gymnasium, Funny Olympics §20h45 à 21h45: Musical Presentation §22h00: Bonne nuit!

Day 2 §6h45 : Wake up §7h30 :Breakfast §8h45 :Prepare for classes §9h00 :Meeting in Gym to explain rotation and classes §9h h45Rotation of four classes. §11h15 :Information session with camp leaders §11h55 :Lunch §13h00 Rotation: Pool, TBA, Campus Store §16h00 : Treasure Hunt §16h45 : Supper §18h00 : Journal §18h30 : Prepare for the dance / Pack §19h30 :Soirée française au Château / French film in the amphitheater §22h00 : Bonne nuit!

Day 3 §6h45 : Wake up! §7h30 : Breakfast §9h00 :Church visit §10h30 : Awards ceremony in gym §Thank-yous §Prizes awarded for best school and top students §Au revoir §11h30: Depart (Eat a boxed lunch on the bus prepared by the cafeteria) §2h30: Arrive at AJ Smeltzer §Please arrange to have your child picked up or give them permission to walk home (but remember they will have their luggage with them)

Fundraising §We will organize two fundraisers: A Valentine’s Day Basket Draw and a Pancake Breakfast §If you wish to participate in the Valentine Basket Draw please send in an item valued at $5.00 by Friday, January 18 th §The Pancake Breakfast (CPF) will be Saturday, February 16 th.

Chaperones All parents wishing to serve as chaperones for the trip must undergo and successfully complete a Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry Search, as per Halifax Regional School Board Policy D.007, Section 4.2. Chaperones whose checks are incomplete or who have not successfully passed one or both checks by the date of the school’s trip will not be permitted to take part in the trip. §The spoken language of the parent does not matter because he/she will be acting as an assistant, not as a language monitor. Please note however that it is important that chaperones make an effort to speak/learn some French during the week. §We will require one male chaperone and a chaperone with First Aid & CPR training.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CHAPERONES 1. To ensure the safety of all students in the school’s group at all times; §2To take note of students who speak English and report it to their teacher; §3. To be responsible for general discipline; §4.To be available to help teachers during afternoon activities; §5. To ensure that boys do not visit in the girls’ rooms in the residences and vice versa; §6.To monitor that students visit other residences only with their teacher’s permission; §7.To ensure that a student is never left unsupervised in the residence, at the campus bookstore, outside, etc. §Please note: §Chaperones have free time while students are attending morning classes, however, they may also attend these classes if they wish. §Chaperones are encouraged to make an effort to speak some French. §We appreciate your volunteering your time and energy – we hope that you will enjoy your experience at Université Sainte-Anne!
