Task 2: Atmosphere Name: Ronda Yuen Subject: MLIM6323.
Our planet is surrounded by layers of atmosphere. These layers differ in The differences within these layers allow life on earth to exist. composition.
The Atmosphere.
Composition  Nitrogen (N 2 ): 78%  Oxygen (O 2 ): 21%  Other Gases: 1% Argon (Ar): 0.934% Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ): 0.037% Water Vapor (H 2 O): 0.01.
Air and the Atmosphere.
Earth’s Atmosphere The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air called the atmosphere. It extends over 372 miles (560 kilometers) from the surface of Earth.
The Atmosphere. Atmosphere Atmosphere Made up of mostly nitrogen and oxygen Protects us from the Sun “atmo” means air/vapor Also contains dust, volcanic.
Our Atmosphere Our atmosphere helps us in two very important ways. –It acts as a blanket by holding in the amount of heat needed to keep earth livable.

Atmosphere layers Thermosphere Extends from 80km out Air is thinnest in this layer and much less dense Temp rises the higher you go (molecules moving.
Atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere reaches from Earth’s surface to 40,000 miles from Earth’s surface. The farther you travel from Earth’s surface the less.
Earth’s Atmosphere. Atmosphere Thin layer of gases that surround and protect our planet. Consists of five layers that interact with each other to circulate.
Earth’s Unique Atmosphere 1. Magnetic Field: a layer of electrical charges that protects Earth from solar winds and cosmic rays Caused by: the liquid.
Layers of the Atmosphere
 Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several different atmospheric layers extending from the Earth’s surface outward: › Troposphere › Stratosphere › Mesosphere.

I’m very HOT! Keep out! It’s very cold here! Ha! Ha! I’m not too cold or too hot! It’s OK here! What makes Earth‘s climate so moderate?

Ha! Ha! Just because I’m covered by a cocoon of gases which is made up of mainly nitrogen and oxygen!

Details of different layers.

10 miles Surface of the earth Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Ionosphere Exosphere miles miles 50 – 180 miles miles Contains water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide… Contains ozone molecules. Coldest part of the atmosphere. Starts to heat up and can reach up to several thousand ºF Transition zone into space.

Troposphere  Most of the clouds that we see in the sky are found in this layer.  This is the layer of atmosphere we associate with weather.  Gases in this layer help retain heat and a portion of which is radiated back to warm the surface of the Earth.  Temperature goes down when you go higher.

Stratosphere  This layer includes the ozone layer.  Ozone molecules absorb ultraviolet radiation from the Sun and protect us from its harmful effects.

Mesosphere  This is the coldest part of the atmosphere.

Ionosphere (thermosphere)  Temperatures in this layer can reach up to several thousand ºF

Exosphere  This is the outermost layer of the atmosphere.
