The Present Tense 4: Modal Verbs Objectif: Be able to use modal verbs in the present tense.

Pour commencer… Vrai ou Faux? 1.Elle vends un lapin. 2.Nous avez un chien. 3.Mon frère est grand. 4.Je sommes petite. 5.Il descend lescalier.

What is a modal verb? Want, must and can are all examples of modal verbs. Modal verbs are usually followed by another verb (in the infinitive). I want to watch TV. She must do her homework. He has to do his homework.

Unfortunately these verbs are irregular in French and we therefore need to learn some more patterns…

vouloir = to want Je veux= I want Tu veux= You want Il/elle veut= He/she wants Nous voulons= We want Vous voulez= You want Ils/elles veulent=They want

devoir = must/to have to Je dois= I must/have to Tu dois= You must/have to Il/elle doit= He/she must/has to Nous devons= We must/have to Vous devez= You must/have to Ils/elles doivent=They must/have to

pouvoir = can/to be able Je peux= I can/am able Tu peux= You can/are able Il/elle peut= He/she can/is able Nous pouvons= We can/are able Vous pouvez= You can/are able Ils/elles peuvent=They can/are able

Translate the following: 1.I have to finish my homework 2.She can watch the film. 3.We want a hamster. 4.I want to eat a sandwich. 5.He is able to work. 6.They must sleep. 7.She wants to sell the cat.

In pairs, make up three sentences using modal verbs. Can you extend these sentences using connectives or opinions?
