Presentation transcript:

A short presentation on increasing efficiency and improving compliance in delivering statutory and mandatory training Assess staff for competence, not just attendance - and reap major benefits for patients, staff and organisations

The NHS South Central Statutory and Mandatory Training Framework  A core set of learning outcomes and training refresher intervals for 9 areas of statutory and mandatory training, agreed by all trusts  Developed by subject experts from across South Central employer organisations  Trusts decide how training is delivered - the Framework indicates where eLearning programmes can help  Designed as the basis of competence assessment – enabling trusts to target training only at those who need it  Refresher intervals built into electronic staff records (ESR) which move with staff between NHS organisations

Core areas of statutory and mandatory training Conflict Resolution Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Fire Safety Health and Safety Infection Prevention and Control Moving and Handling Safeguarding Children Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Resuscitation

 A new way for trusts to assess staff  Online assessments developed for 7 out of 9 areas  Assessed by computer, quick to do  Links to local learning management systems and individual staff records  Staff who need further repeat training are directly pointed to appropriate learning opportunities  Assessments ready to pilot from October 2011, and more widely available from January 2012 The next step: on line competence assessments

If only 10% of the 96,000 staff employed across NHS South Central take online assessments in fire, health & safety, moving & handling Potential to achieve savings of £17 million or 110 productive years Benefits of online competence assessment

 Mobile learning – online learning through a smartphone, tablet or other portable device  A great option for NHS staff work away from desktops or are constantly on the move  SHA-commissioned research reveals that the majority of staff and managers welcome the opportunity to learn and be assessed via a mobile device  Two clinical learning modules already launched  A new Health and Safety app, based on the NHS South Central Framework learning outcomes and competence assessments, is currently being piloted at Southern Health Trust M-learning – learning on the go

For employer trusts Improved compliance and reduced risk Significant cost and productive time savings For staff More flexible access to learning and assessment Where agreed, no need to attend training if competence For trainers Less time on repeat/routine training → more time for specialist/localised training Assurance that all local Trusts using same minimum standards Benefits at a glance

Timetable for action October 2011 Launch of 2011 version of NHS South Central Statutory & Mandatory Framework October 2011 Online competence assessments ready for piloting in trusts November 2011 Health and Safety app available to iPhone users January 2012 Online competence assessments available to all trusts
