Crops: lakh MTs Area under Vegetables: 1.96 lakh ha Production of Vegetables: lakh MTs Average Rainfall: mm Horticulture sector contributes appx. 5.16% GSDP (Rs.18,703 crores) of the state ( ). In India, Telangana stands 3 rd in area & 8 th position in production of fruits Ranks 1st in area & Production of Turmeric. In vegetables Telangana stands 11 th in Area & 13 th in Production. Estimated Production : lakh MTs  Monthly requirement of the State : 3.16 lakh MTs  Requirement during rainy season (June, July & August) : 9.48 lakh MTs  Present Vegetable standing crop production(0.37 lakh Ha) : 4.4 Lakh MTs  There is a gap of 5.08 lakh MTs is met from arrivals from other States Requirement of Vegetables:  Population of Hyderabad : 100 lakhs approx.  Per day requirement (ICMR recomdn.) : 300 g/ day/person  Annual requirement : 11 lakh tonnes  Total Annual estimated arrivals in Hyd. City : 7.8 LakhMTs  There is a gap of 3.2 lakh MTs which needs to be addressed by Govt. intervention. DEMAND AND SUPPLY STATUS OF VEGETABLES IN TELANGANA STATE Demand for Vegetables: Increased health awareness, high population growth rate, changing dietary patterns of increasingly affluent middle class people and availability of packaged vegetables, has generated a year round high demand for vegetables.

STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY DEPARTMENT 1.Preparedness at Field 2.Technology dissemination 3.Convergence with allied departments 1.Preparedness at Field:  Advanced preparation of production plan in vegetable clusters.  Ensure supply and availability of Hybrid Vegetable seed and other inputs.  Introduction of latest advance technology.  Demonstration of technology and programmes in cluster areas.  Dissemination of information through multimedia regarding technology and availability of inputs. STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY DEPARTMENT 2.Technology dissemination  Capacity building and intensive training programmes for vegetable farmers are taken up to empower farmer in sustainable/ profitable vegetable production round the year.  Capacity building for officers and stake holders and re-orient extension activities to be more demand-driven in Vegetable clusters.  Exposure visits to advance technologies. [[[ 3.Convergence with allied departments  Develop marketing linkages by establishment of collection centres.  Ensuring availability of quality vegetable seed, latest farm machinery through custom hiring centers through Agriculture department.  Market intervention for supply of essential Vegetables like onion & Tomato at reasonable price during lean period.

INTERVENTIONS ADOPTED BY DEPARTMENT  Supply of Hybrid Vegetable seed on 50% subsidy to promote area expansion of Vegetables. It is proposed to promote Vegetable area with 90% subsidy on pluglings during Area covered under Hybrid Vegetable seed as on today 1.50 Lakh Ha Sl. INTERVENTIONS ADOPTED BY DEPARTMENT  To ensure continuous supply and off- season high value vegetable cultivation, Telangana Govt. has launched poly house cultivation of vegetables for the 1 st time with 75 % subsidy, off-season vegetable production helps to bridge the seasonal gap between demand and supply.  For the year an area of 850 acres is proposed with an outlay of Rs crores for Cultivation of vegetables under green house/ poly house.
