Components of Scholarly Research Articles Abstract Introduction Methods Results Conclusion References

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Abstract Helps the reader determine if the topic is relevant to their professional interests and worth the time and effort to read. Not a substitute for reading the article.

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Introduction The introduction will give the reader details on the need for the current research and situate it within existing knowledge. Note that sometimes authors separate out the justification for the current research with citing the relevant literature.

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Methods Allows for the evaluation of proper/ appropriate research methodology. Allows for the verification of results.

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Results The results section contains a reporting of the collected data including any statistical analysis. Important findings are often highlighted but no conclusions are drawn at this point.

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Discussion The authors will point out significant findings from their research and suggest the implications of these findings. The authors will point out any limitations of their research and ideas for additional research. The discussion section is where all the claims and important findings are made and it is wise to read this section thoroughly and critically.

Components of Scholarly Research Articles References The reader is referred to the references for additional details. References also provide an extra level of authority by giving the reader the ability to verify the claims made by an author. This is the hallmark of scholarly literature compared to other sources.

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Abstract Introduction Methods ↑ Objective, old/established ↑ ↓ Subjective, creating new knowledge ↓ Results Conclusion References

Components of Scholarly Research Articles Unlike more popular magazine articles, who’s main purpose is to entertain, inform, or promote a particular point of view, scholarly research articles exist to disseminate the results of research.
