Managing Your Digital Footprint (Or, not putting your foot in it…) Scott Hibberson, e-Learning Advisor Rose Bowl, Leeds, 13 th june 2012 #LTO12

Aims & Objectives Aims To Identify some of the key advantages and disadvantages of using social media for both professional and personal reasons To raise awareness about how to behave safely and responsibly online Objectives By the end of the session the learners will be able to:- List at least four social media sites and explain the potential benefits and pitfalls of using them. Have an increased awareness of their own digital footprint and guidance on how to act responsibly and safely online

Discussion What social media site do you use and how do you use them? Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, Google+, MySpace, Foursquare, Pinterest etc. Does anyone have both work and personal contacts on the same social media site and, if so, how do they manage this? How do your contacts overlap? Do work friends know non work friends, for example?

Roleplay Assign Character & Observer roles Using the Floor Plan on the next slide, demonstrate the virtual and physical relationships between the characters Set the scene using the Timeline

Floor Plan

Discussion What did we learn about the characters? What were the key benefits to using social media, both professionally and personally? What could have been done to ensure that the pitfalls to using social media were avoided?

Recommendations Any social media post should be considered in terms of discoverability and audience Explore the privacy settings on each social media site you use Remember, the people you share with can always share your information with others Friends of friends settings are effectively the same as public

Recommendations (cont) Just because you don’t use social media sites, doesn’t mean to say that you don’t already have a presence on them Not being on social media sites can be quite isolating, as many face-to-face activities are organised through social media networks Separation of professional and personal networks is often complex and needs to be considered case by case rather than hard and fast rules.
