Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Management: Cost/Schedule Impact of Continuing Resolution Long-Lead Procurements Original plan was to be ready to sign contracts November 2004 Now planning on a minimum of 4 months delay Have replanned accordingly Replan almost complete, but needs some final review Acquisition Plan Still plan on purchasing Ti strongbacks, magnet blocks, and magnet poles and then having the assembly done by two mechanical assembly vendors. We have asked and have been given the nod to go forward with two 1 st article undulators produced via the above plan. We believe that by doing this we will mitigate the risks in the best possible manner. 33 rd Undulator Expected Completion Date June 2007 This is later than before by about 4 months, but is still well within the new replan guidelines

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Management: Costs/Schedule (Cont.) FY05 Ramp up of ANL people The current replan shows the following These numbers have been given to Murray Gibson and he feels they are within the capabilities of the APS to handle Based on this profile a small amount of resource smoothing will be done.

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 General Responses to Previous FAC System Integration Integration of the undulator to the cradle to the girder to the … Symmetric placement of the Granite to Undulators Etc. The above await the hiring of or assignment of an undulator system integration engineer. There are and have been plans but we have not had the resources to proceed with it. We continue to keep integration in mind, but we really do need to find these people 1 ANL and 1 SLAC Start of Commissioning When Everything is a Mess We just had a second diagnostics and commissioning workshop a few weeks back and will certainly continue to refine our ideas on how to start commissioning. We also plan to prototype diagnostics whenever possible and test under near actual conditions. This is and has always been in the plan.

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 General Responses to Previous FAC (Cont.) Quadrupole Choice We have chosen to drop the PM quadrupole in favor of EM Quads This provides us a more robust method of doing the critical beam-based alignment Correctors will be in place to simplify quad center shifting Rollaway Capabilities and Implementation We will have remote capability to move all undulators horizontally This allow many interesting opportunities What moves and what does not Cradle concept allows independent horizontal motion of the undulators without moving the quadrupoles or BPMs “Gross” alignment of the quadrupole and undulator centers will be done with the cam movers with final quad center positioning done with the correctors.

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 General Responses to Previous FAC (Cont.) Acquisition Methodology/Choice See previous statements Temperature in Tunnel The committee had recommended looking at using lower temperatures in the tunnel, the same as the natural tunnel temperature. We do not feel that this provides a significant gain over the life of the project Once heated the tunnel should stay close to the desired temperature due to the large mass involved

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Vacuum/Mechanical Examples of Progress (See Walters talk for more details Chamber Bellows Assembly

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Vacuum/Mechanical Examples of Progress (See Walters talk for more details Chamber support for moveable undulator capability Undulator Moves In & Out Undulator Vacuum Chamber with Supports

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Vacuum/Mechanical Examples of Progress (See Walters talk for more details Chamber transition plan

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 AC Conductivity Concern Could spoil the FEL process enough to prevent Cu or Al According to the calculations Al appears to be better than Cu. Also a flat (rectangular) chamber appears to be better. Of course a larger gap also improves matters And this is the problem

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 AC Conductivity Concern Serious study is presently underway to assess this concern See talks of Bane, Nuhn Impacts could be Different Chamber material and/or geometry Increase undulator gap Different period In the meantime We are studying the construction of an Al chamber with rectangular geometry We have looked at the impact on LLPs and how much of a gap change is tolerable before a significant change must be made We will need to decide what we are going to do soon Such changes would impact just about everything

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Diagnostics: OTR and Wire Scanners Physics/Engineering Design Very Mature Sharing space side-by-side OTR profiler Wire scanner X-ray diagnostics provision Double crystal optics Integrating detector (intensity) Imaging detector (distribution) See Bingxin Yang talk for more details

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Diagnostics: BPM Considering going to C- band vs. X-band Resolution Still relying on past measurements as a proof of principle Status Limited funds have been available to pursue much further than basic engineering See Dean Walters talk for additional limited details

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Diagnostics: End of Undulator Concept Differential Measurement of Spontaneous Signal Bingxin Yang has an idea to use two undulator to determine the effective K of one to another to a level of better than Dependent on movable undulators See Bingxin’s talk for additional details

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Undulator System Controls Coordination Controls effort is being coordinated by Bob Dalesio at SLAC ANL will work closely with Bob to ensure smooth integration of the undulator system controls with the rest of the LCLS system See Josh Stein’s and Bob Dalesio’s talk for more details

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Undulator: Prototype Status Value Engineered Thoroughly Most recently Wingless poles Aluminum magnet block/pole holder simplification All measurement tested Including before and after transporting

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Undulator: Status of LLPs Statement of Work Complete for Ti stongback Near complete for the poles and the magnet blocks Federal Business Opportunities (FedBizOps) Requests for interest released Will be used to qualify vendors See Marion White’s talk for many more details

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Undulator: Magnet Measurement Facility Focus on Requirements (See Marion’s Talk) Ensure the facility will meet the requirements ESRF Bench We are looking into the advantages and disadvantages of this bench compared to the one presently planned We have their rough cost estimate There will be a MMF review this Thursday the 14 th.

Stephen Milton Undulator System 12 October 2004 Undulator System Update: Summary Progress has been made in all areas Diagnostics, Vacuum, Controls, Magnets and Supports Continuing Resolution We will be very constrained until this is resolved but… …we can tough out this for a short period of time before the impact becomes large AC Conductivity We need to understand the impact of this and make a decision soon as to how we will proceed. A change at this time will have a very large impact But if it is required it is required
