2 Tuning Results Parameters controlled by tuning process include Keff
First and Second Field Integrals Overall phase error Phase error vs. z. Phase Shake Tuning affects x range of ±2 mm. Measurement and documentation includes x range of ±6 mm. All results are within tolerance. The following slides show a few examples. 2

6 Progress Since Last FAC
We have 20 undulators tuned and fiducialized. The MMF temperature control is working well. The reference undulator measurements repeat within spec. We improved rough tuning procedure to speed-up throughput. (a) Use capacitive sensors to monitor gap adjustments (b) Use new gap shimming stand Bad bolts are being replaced Dimensions of tapered shims are measured to compensate for machining accuracy. Challenges Now we need to set K to a specified value. Can’t re-assign slot number. Overall throughput is affected by re-checking of stored undulators. We need a couple of days to maintain the Kugler bench. New air compressor still not installed. 6

8 Tuning Status Summary Present Status:
20 undulators tuned and fiducialized 0 in fine tuning 3 in rough tuning 4 deferred for major re-work (bad end magnets, large sag might hit beam pipe, low field, pole sticking into gap) (minor problems like bad bolts or requiring gap shim replacement are fixed as we go) Processing started for 27 undulator segments From these: completed 03 in Rough Tuning [R:SN10, R:SN22, R:SN26] 04 in Holding [T:SN04, F:SN06, R:SN23, R:SN36] MM: 03/07 04/07 05/07 06/07 07/07 08/07 09/07 10/07 11/07 12/07 01/08 ##: AC: 8

9 Tuning Schedule (Ruland)
tuning throughput is close to three segments per month on average without hardware problems, Re-fiducialization is a four day process Trying to integrate re-fiducialization with standardization to optimize CMM usage 9

10 Tuning Schedule Detail (Ruland)
Rough tuning takes on average three days longer than fine tuning: we will try to use the accumulated gap after every other segment for re-fiducialization  7 segments, this leaves 13 to be done after tuning is complete 10

11 Consequences of Low-Temperature Storage
Tuned undulators have been stored in Bldg 750. Undulator Temperature dropped to 11 °C since early November 2007. Three undulators [SN20, SN37, SN39] have been returned to MMF and measured on Kugler bench. Result: Average gap height decreased by up to 1 µm. Magnetic and mechanical changes similar in all three magnets. Field change can be compensated by moving magnetic axis in x direction by about 200 µm. At new x location, all tuning parameters are within tolerance. Plan: (1) Store all newly tuned and/or re-fiducialized undulators in temperature stabilized clean room in Bldg 33 (capacity about 10) until Undulator Tunnel is ready. (2) Move and store tuned undulators on north side of Undulator Tunnel after beneficial occupancy and AC commissioning. (3) Re-fiducialize the other 16 undulators that are presently stored in Bldg 750 as storage capacity allows. Temperature regulated storage is also required for the girders after alignment. 11

20 When we are done with production: fix undulators with severe problems
Undulator To-Do List When we are done with production: fix undulators with severe problems study temperature dependence of K re-measure all previously tuned undulators study further undulator handling requirements 20

21 Conclusion Production undulator tuning is underway.
The lab and equipment are performing well. (But we need the new air compressor installed, borrowed time.) 20 undulators are tuned and fiducialized. Improved rough tuning procedure speeds-up throughput Reference undulator measurements are within spec. Reference magnet measurements are stable. We are checking that the way the undulator is mounted will not change the fiducialization, and twist can be compensated by a pitch adjustment. After production, we will fix undulators and continue studies Undulators stored in Bldg 750 changed location of magnetic axis. Tuned undulators and girders will be stored in temperature controlled areas from now on. 21
