Freshmen Health

Pause for Thought? What is Health? How can I tell if I am healthy? Can I control my own health? How can I influence my own health?

Health No longer means the absence of illness It means the well being of your body, mind and your relationship with others This is now linked to our quality of life meaning: the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life Because of medical advances people are living much longer, there is a new health trend, people are more aware of their personal health

Characteristics of a Healthy Person 1. Physical Health: How well your body functions. Healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and proper medical and dental care 2. Mental Health: how good you guys feel about yourself and how you cope with day to day stressors What is a an example of a day to day stressor? 3. Social Health: How well you get along with other, friends, family, loving relationships etc.

Wellness Combining your social physical and mental health They are ALL related Your WELLNESS is your overall health combining all three types of health People who have a handle of all three and balance them have am good overall well being

Health Risk A risk Factor- is any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease or other negative outcomes What would be some risk factors? What are some risk factors specific for a teenager? Risk factors can be due to heredity, the environment or our behavior Heredity: all the traits that are passed biologically from parent to child

Heredity Risk Factors? What are some example of genetic health risks? What are some genetic health factors that are prevalent in your family? What are some preventative things you can do to help prevent there hereditary health risk factors?

Long Term and Short Term Long Term Health Risks? Developing cancer, heart disease from bad diet, smoking or lack of exercise, skin cancer Short Term Health Risks? Car accidents because you don’t wear a seat belt, use of drugs and alcohol, making poor decisions, lack of good judgement.

Environmental Risk Factors This is all the physical and social conditions surrounding a person and the influences they have on a person Environmental risk factors can often be avoided while others are impossible to avoid and are a part of everyday life What would be some example of common environmental factors? What are example of environmental risk factors that you come in contact with?

Physical Environment This includes both your indoor and outdoor surroundings Quality of air both indoor and outdoor, water you drink, sunlight, waste etc. Think of environmental factors in your home, outside, work, family and friends’ houses and even school What are ways you can change these physical environment risk factors

Social Environment This is the people around you, your family, friends, classmates and other people you spend time with How could those you surround yourself with have an affect on your health?

Behavioral Risk Factors While hereditary and environmental risk factors are important to health, the decisions you make everyday are far more important For example: staying up late on the computer, smoking, drinking, experimenting with drugs, sexual behavior, decisions you make with friends… all these have a direct impact on your life and overall health these decisions have consequences which not only will affect your physical health but also your emotional and mental health dealing with the stress of these consequences

Heredity All traits that are passed biologically from parent to child. Traits you inherit can affect your health. What are some things that can be passed down?

Health Goal What are some behaviors/habits you have now that affect your own health? Think short term and long term affects and List 3. What is your health goal for the new year? Come up with three in your notebook

Making Changes for Health

Awareness The process of behavior change always begins with awareness A person must recognize a problem before anything can be done to change it however many health problem like high blood pressure and depression have no health signs

Knowledge once you are aware of a health issue it is important to gain knowledge on that specific topic New information pertaining to health is happening everyday Getting information from reliable sources is a very important step. What would be unreliable sources for health information?
