RSAC Ad Hoc “Why Membership Matters” Summary for RSAC Meeting Jan 2014 Karen Copper

Ad Hoc Committee Members Karen Copper Jayant Ramakrishnan Luisella Giulicchi Alexander Pechloff Career & Workforce Development Committee Participants: Bob Wessels

Action Item 6: Merri Sanchez is to prepare a communication to sections requesting feedback on the awards proposal. Feedback is to go through the RACs. Action : Staff to survey/research those members who use this vehicle for membership renewal and report at August RSAC meeting. Action Closed. This action resulted from the desire to decouple the membership and conference registration. About 70% of those that join via a conference drop their membership, citing that they don’t see value in membership, they only wanted to attend the conference. With the overall membership numbers declining, now is not a good time to decouple membership and conference registration. We need to address the problem, which is showing/communicating the value of AIAA beyond the conference. RSAC Action

Look at how/what we can use at the Forums to instill in members that Membership Matters. Other ways to address the issue: Sections need to start communicating why membership matters, especially to new members. Staff to add codes to the reports and/or the Datamaker to show how members joined. Include the messaging in the Membership webinar. Staff will look for ways to communicate the message throughout the year. Provide the Regional Directors with the join data so they can communicate with new members. Task
