Group Work Aims:  gain an understanding of the advantages of group work in the language class  develop an understanding of problems in using group work, and how to overcome these problems.

Activity 1 How should we group learners? Objectives: share their experiences of doing group work in their primary schools experience a group activity, and reflect on it. Time: 50mins

1. Group/Class work (15mins) Questions for discussion: 1.What kind of group work do you do in your English class? 2.How do you do group work if desks and chairs cannot be moved? 3.What group work do you do in your English class if there are more than 50 students in the classroom?

2. Class/ Group Work (20mins) a)Listen to a story b)Now work in groups. Put the people in the story in order, according to how much you think they are to blame for what happened to the woman. Start with the person you think is most to blame, and finish with the person who is least to blame. c)Report back to the class.

3. Class/ Group work (10mins.) a)Choose a student to take the part of the wife. She will sit at the front of the class, and answer your questions. Each group can ask two questions. b)Now choose someone to take the parts of the young man, the husband, the soldier, and the ferryman. Interview these people as you did the wife. c)Go back into the same groups as in Step 2. Decide whether you want to change your order of who is most /least to blame. Write your new order. d)Report your decision back to the class.

4. Individual work (5mins.) Think about these questions for reflection: 1.How did you enjoy the activity? 2.What was useful about the activity? 3.What did the trainer do to organize the activity? 4.Would you use what you have learned in your own teaching?

Activity 2 Group Work—advantages and problems Objectives:  experience a group activity  discuss the advantages of group work, as well as the problems and how to solve them Time: 50mins.

1. Group work (10mins) Work in groups of four or five, and do the activity below. One person from each group writes down the lists that the group agrees on.

2. Class work (20min) Report back to the class on your group decision.

3. Group work (10mins) Work in pairs, and discuss these questions. 1.What are the advantages of using group work in the English class? 2.What are the possible problems? 3.How can you overcome the problems?

4. Class work (10mins) Report back to the class on your decision.

Some suggestions for Overcoming the problems of group work: Give enough preparation Check afterwards Give clear instructions about when to start, what to do, and when to stop. Give clearly defined tasks which do not continue for too long. Set up a routine, so that students accept the idea of working in groups, and know exactly what to do.
