Presentation Outline Introduction Activities in FY11 by objective Suggested way forward for FY12 Suggested way forward for PIAIT

Introduction Project duration: October 2009 – September main objectives: To contribute to strategic and operational policies on livestock research and development so as to increase livestock’s contributions to development; To improve technology dissemination and adoption, marketing, farmer organizational capacity and information sharing amongst stakeholders through innovation platforms; To strengthen capacity for livestock research, technology transfer approaches and extension amongst stakeholders in the livestock sector; To generate evidence to support and guide livestock development.

Activities in FY11 – Objective 1 To contribute to strategic and operational policies on livestock research and development so as to increase livestock’s contributions to development – Livestock sector overview study – Livestock sector stakeholder’s meeting (Sept 29 th 2011) Meeting objectives: To provide feedback on the livestock sector overview study To establish a livestock working group/forum (fórum de pecuária); “Comissão instaladora do forum” created; 1st meeting held. Second meeting planned for December – 1 st version of directory of key persons in the Mozambican livestock sector was produced, printed and circulated

Activities in FY11 – Objective 2 To improve technology dissemination and adoption, marketing, farmer organizational capacity and information sharing amongst stakeholders through innovation platforms; Innovation platforms  Three IP meetings held in Mucumbura and Two meetings in Chibuto Varying results: Chaimite: difficult to get the group together, president not involved... Mukumbura: several challenges address by IP  weight scale, training in cattle branding, farmer to farmer training (45) in dry season feeding techniques, forage bank

Forage banks – One nursery of Amora alba - established in Chibuto – Fodder cuttings and seedlings (Amora alba; Leucaena leucocephala, and Moringa olifeira)- available to the Chibuto IP members. – Multiplication of elephant grass by one participant for distribution to other farmers  Most of the individual forage banks have dried or eaten by goats... Activities in FY11 – Objective 2

Based on discussions in Nov 2010: focus on 2 value chains  cattle and goats Set of goat related activities in project sites AND Angonia district (former COMPETE project site) – Focus group discussions on goat rearing – Improved goat housing – Training in goat health, reproduction and feeding Activities in FY11 – Objective 2

Bairro 2 – Mukumbura sede Zambeze 1 Activities in FY11 – Objective 2

Improved goat housing constructed by communities to date: – Angonia: 1 – Chibuto: 2 – Magoe: farmers (66F, 84 M) trained in goat health and management Training on goat reproduction and breeding in Angonia Activities in FY11 – Objective 2

Value chain maps were made for the 2 project sites  Example: Goat meat value chain map Chibuto district Activities in FY11 – Objective 2

To strengthen capacity for livestock research, technology transfer approaches and extension amongst stakeholders in the livestock sector October 2010: 4-day training on research for development M&E March 2011: 3-day introductory course on value chain analysis and innovation platforms – USAID & imGoats project staff (EC/IFAD funded) Manual development (in progress) Support MSc student (in progress) Activities in FY11 – Objective 3

To generate evidence to support and guide livestock development M&E commissions at IP level established and trained Regular meetings conducted with SDAE and SPP staff on project progress Activities in FY11 – Objective 4

We’ll need to strengthen what was done in FY11: No new activities, emphasis on setting up farmer to farmer training programs to out scale activities. Need to strengthen IP functioning, especially in Chibuto. Conduct field days for NGO’s that could take up the approach used & implement elsewhere … Suggested way forward FY12

 Given its unique position, the platform should give strategic advice on possible collaboration between IIAM and CG centres.  Host 3 monthly meetings with in depth presentation on certain project and allow for brainstorm on possible future joined projects. Suggested way PIAIT platform
