2 OVERVIEW OF NUTRITION PROBLEM IN UGANDA THE PROBLEM  Despite continued efforts, unacceptably high malnutrition rates in Uganda 33 % of CU5 are stunted 5% of CU5 are wasted 14% of CU5 are underweight  Nutrition has a crucial impact on health, education and development yet consequences of malnutrition are not fully appreciated Deaths Disabilities School Performance Economic Productivity

6 UNAP: UNAP: Nutrition as a human rights issue, as a development issue The Uganda Nutrition Action Plan (UNAP 2011-16) was adopted as the country’s strategy for scaling up nutrition. Was launched in November, 2011 by H.E. Implementation of the UNAP, using the multi- sectoral approach, is coordinated in the Office of the Prime Minister

7 The UNAP- it’s thrust Nutrition as a development issue, the 1000 days as a window of opportunity; Brings together (Gov’t) Sectors, DPs, CSOs, PS, Academia Goal: to reduce malnutrition levels among women of reproductive age, infants and young children from 2011 through 2016 and beyond. Focus: National efforts & public resources to improve infant & maternal nutrition outcomes through scale – up of proven interventions

8 Nutrition in National Policy Frameworks Nutrition is high priority of government. NDP2has reduction of stunting from the current 33% to 22% by 2020. Putting in place a National Nutrition Policy -the overarching policy framework to guide nutrition programming towards the achievement of the NDP2 and National Vision targets.

9 The UNAP as SUN Framework in Uganda- UNAP as the strategic framework for SUN. Platforms and networks in place under the stewardship of government. BRINGING TOGETHER 8 sectors, UN agencies, development partners, Civil Society, the Private Sector and the Academia The same principle at the sector level and local government level.

10 Leveraging resources and Partnerships: to make visible strides in stemming malnutrition, we must be highly coordinated and partnerships must be properly managed. All partners must be rallied towards the common results framework (action plans with clear milestones, and indicators to measure progress). Coordinating point must have convening power.

11 Generating and sustaining momentum and commitment In Uganda implementation of government programmes is at the district created coordination structures and strengthened the capacity of those structures to effectively plan, budget coordinate and manage partnerships Purpose: to sustain momentum and commitment both at the national and sub- national levels.

Stressing that food security does not necessarily translate into nutrition Security. ….. aim to influence the attitudes and practices at the household level. ….strengthen nutrition planning and programming at all levels Capacity building for effective nutrition programming at all levels

Cont’d ….. strengthening community based approaches so at to bring about positive change on the nutrition landscape. …..Emphasis on sharing with and learning from each other as SUN countries. ……Strengthen mobilization and advocacy- target the youth especially young girls- future mothers- potential change agents!

Cont’d … strengthen government leadership, transparency and strategic partnership in line with the SUN principles; … strengthen reporting and collection of evidence to that progress can be tracked and lessons learnt and disseminated. ….initiate and strengthen dialogue on financing for nutrition
