Academia Work to date October 15, 2013

What concrete engagement? o For good research engagement: clear focus needed. o Identify overlap and synergy, create a mechanism to make this happen o Difficult for research organisations to participate, or in kind contribution via previously funded research o Link various initiatives in the world, funding is lacking everywhere. Make concerted actions. Can contribute to FA2 and FA3, FA1 hard to find focus. Suggests to focus on feed and water, than synergy with other research programs in the world.

What’s in it for us? o GAA can offer access to private sector. Important for us, researchers o We produce knowledge. Here we go for impact. o Communicate with stakeholders via the Agenda. o Concrete actions implemented via specific industries, not via sector organisations o Agenda helps to find new funds. Beside existing research program? o Agenda can help to change vision by combining research, help to build partnership, is also justification for funding in own country.

Strategies and mechanisms o White paper ATF: holistic view, MSP is platform to develop that vision, helps to address cooperation, connects research to private sector and NGO’s. Process of White Paper useful. o Transdisciplinary approach, including all stakeholders. o Do we have a clear vision on who is doing what? What research is useful, o Existing knowledge, how to make it work. Also research on processes and institutions. Application, tailoring knowledge, work on barriers to adoption. o Two way role of research: a) identify and show best practices, distribute information, short term b) build new knowledge for innovations, long term.

Strategies and mechanisms o Lacking capacity building, need capacity development o Consultation stakeholders: gap for research identified, develop research focus o Concrete engagement?

What support can you provide? o ILRI can link to other CGIAR institutes and research programs: value chains, dry lands o ER: identified 2- 3 projects with ILRI, ILRI contributes to FA1 via the projects. o Livestock and Fish, LEAP. Refer to concerted actions. o Livestock for local development network: MS approach, research but also outcome for stakeholders Multi facet approach o Above: existing, but what do we miss? o People that are not engaged. Make connections? o Given the participants need to sign up, how to interact with the ones that didn’t sign up?

What support can you provide? o There are many activities going on outside. You see them as you start to work. o Make practice change via initiatives, show that it works, will make people link to Agenda o Practice change will occur via MSP network o Why are we doing this? Overarching principles. Not very clear, only for insiders. How: address to all. What: (for research) guide the agenda, provide evidence. o Diversity of research and diversity of stakeholders.

Concrete commitment o Networking and inform, opportunities for output and impact, have our research agendas informed, guided by stakeholders o Knowledge, identify topics, catalyse action o Develop, tailor proposals, align with ongoing research o What specific support/outcome are you looking for? o But what’s in it for us? Research for implementation in practice

Waste to Worth: creating action on the ground
