3 3 Aquaculture Development in the Region : Main conclusions from the discussions were : Commercialise Aquaculture Need for a Regional Aquaculture Center to co-ordinate and harmonize development efforts in the region

4 4 General conclusion Country Recommendations emphasized The need for capacity building for all aquaculture staff and farmers Availability of quality and affordable fish seed and feed Development and completion of NADs Acceleration of the implementation of NADS and projects

5 5 Recommendations for the Promotion of Commercial Aquaculture in the Region Government incentives e.g tax reduction, land for investment, limit on trade restrictions etc Appropriate capacity building for aquaculture personnel to guide development and research initiatives Credit or a fund to support investors at various levels

6 6 Recommendations for the Promotion of Commercial Aquaculture in the Region The need for a Regional Aquaculture center to steer the sector Available quality, adequate and affordable fish seed and feed Established markets for aquaculture products Support private sector involvement

7 7 Recommendations to Project (GCP/INT/053/JPN) Clear TORS and Action plans of the project(GCP/INT/053/JPN) Submit project proposals to donors Establish a Regional Aquaculture Training Centre

8 8 Recommendations to Project (GCP/INT/053/JPN) Assist in the completion and implementation of National Aquaculture Development Strategies (NADS) Start quarterly project publications of workshop proceedings Support to organise National Workshops Provide financial assistance to address major constraints in commercial fish feed and seed production

9 9 Recommendations to Project (GCP/INT/053/JPN) Assist in bridging the gap that hinders progress from small scale subsistence aquaculture to medium and large scale commercial aquaculture Provide capacity building and technical support to address key constraints Facilitate exchange of experience and technology transfer within and outside Africa especially with ASEAN countries

10 10 Recommendations to FAO Facilitate implementation of workshop recommendations Support consultations between Ministry in Charge of Aquaculture and Institutions in charge of Research and training Support extension of the aquaculture strategy and regulatory laws to grass root levels Establish mechanisms for a credit fund for aquaculture investors

11 11 Recommendations to FAO Facilitate networks for aquaculture development Facilitate round table co-operation structures to mobilize resources for aquaculture promotion Provide technical support, especially in the implementation of NADS Assist in the establishment of systems for collecting statistics on aquaculture

12 12 Recommendations to Donors Support research institute activities Support government to promote commercial aquaculture initiatives Financial support to identified projects and programmes Provide a credit facility to aquaculture investors

19 19 Recommendations to Farmer Organisations, Private Sector and Civil Society Be involved in the promotion of commercial aquaculture Organize farmers by profile (producers of fish, producers o fingerlings, producers of feeds, sellers, markets etc) Encourage the Private sector to invest in fish feed and seed production

20 20 Recommendations to Farmer Organisations, Private Sector and Civil Society Private sector and Civil society should assist farmers to increase production, access finance markets and other services Promote PPPs to upscale the commercialization of aquaculture in the country

21 21 Recommendations to Research Institutions Deliver appropriate technologies at each level of development Provide good quality fish seed and feed Conduct applied demand driven research to address the needs of the people

22 22 Recommendations to Research Institutions Share research findings with the users of this information Promote studies on seed production, fish feed and potential areas for aquaculture Promote studies in the identification of more potential species for aquaculture e.g bivalves, finfish, Nile Perch
