3 Expected Accomplishment and Achievements Expected accomplishment 2010-2011: Improved capacity at the national, subregional and regional levels for designing and implementing effective policies, strategies and programmes for achieving food security and sustainable development in line with the NEPAD priorities and the JPOI Indicators of achievement: Increased number of member States designing and implementing policies and programs Increased number of policymakers and stakeholders with better knowledge and understanding of climate change and development Increased number of sub-regional and regional partnership agreements and technical cooperation programs

4 Highlights of Implementation/1 Agriculture and Food Security Promotion of regionally-coordinated value chains of strategic food and agricultural commodities EGM, which recommended field project work on maize and livestock in COMESA, and rice, maize and livestock in ECOWAS Field projects underway on policy roadmap for regional value chains of these strategic commodities, in partnership with AUC, COMESA, ECOWAS and FAO EGM planned to review the resulting policy reports and related publication Validation workshop and dissemination policy symposium planned for November 2012

12 Highlights of Results/1 Land, agriculture and food security Effective engagement of COMESA and ECOWAS in developing regional value chains of rice, maize and livestock products Buy-in from and support to member States in using the framework and guidelines for land policy formulation Enhanced capacity of 40 trainers in applying the framework and guidelines for land policy formulation Action plan developed to address FDI in agricultural land in Africa Water: A functioning Southern Sudan Water Information Clearing House

13 Highlights of Results/2 Climate change ADF-VII: Awareness and engagement of over 1000 stakeholders (public sector, private business, civil society, R&D community, development partners) in tackling climate change for sustainable development Effective establishment of an operational ACPC Strengthened consensus among member Sates on the common African negotiation position on climate change through technical support to CAHSOCC, AUC, AMCEN and African negotiators Increased engagement of member States for mainstreaming climate change in development strategies, plans and policies

14 Highlights of Results/3 Environment and sustainable development Enhanced capacity of 46 policymakers and experts from ECOWAS Commission and member States in formulating and implementing coherent trade and environment policies Enhanced awareness of over 90 policy makers and experts from member Sates, AUC, RECs and AfDB on institutional and strategic frameworks for sustainable development Enhanced awareness of, and agreement by, over 100 policy makers and experts from member Sates, AUC and RECs on the ECA indicator framework and indices for sustainable development in Africa Coming soon … Consensus among all member States on a common statement on Africa’s priorities and expectations for Rio+20

15 Challenges and Lessons Learned Considerable recruitment challenges for developing and implementing new major projects:  ACPC (23 posts)  LPI phase II (4 posts) Overload of major outputs – e.g. Rio+20 preparations (9 reports, 5 sub-regional workshops and 1 regional conference, not reflected in initial programme of work) Strengthening of inter/cross-divisional and inter- institutional collaboration, e.g. for ADF-VII, the preparation of Rio+20, and work on promoting regional agricultural commodity value chains Moving along the learning curve of strengthened partnership/joint initiatives with the AUC and AfDB despite differences in institutional and business processes
