THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE

New World Old World With the “discovery” of the *New World* (the Americas) in 1492, came Europeans. Europe began to colonize the Americas and the need for labor could not be fulfilled by the indigenous. Europeans began looking at Africa for labor.

Between 1492 and 1867, a minimum of 10 million Africans were transported to the Americas. The majority (95%) were sent to Brazil and the Caribbean. About 5% of the slaves ended up in the United States.

THE TRIANGULAR TRADE

Olaudah Equiano Ayuba Suleiman Diallo Slave narratives were written to describe the horrors of slavery. *Olaudah Equiano* and *Ayuba Suleiman* wrote about their journey and life as slaves. *Abolitionists* used these stories as evidence against slavery.
