2 With the “discovery” of the. New World
With the “discovery” of the *New World* (the Americas) in 1492, came Europeans. Europe began to colonize the Americas and the need for labor could not be fulfilled by the indigenous. Europeans began looking at Africa for labor. Old World New World

3 Between 1492 and 1867, a minimum of 10 million Africans were transported to the Americas.
The majority (95%) were sent to Brazil and the Caribbean. About 5% of the slaves ended up in the United States.

4 The Triangular Trade

5 Slave narratives were written to describe the horrors of slavery.
*Olaudah Equiano* and *Ayuba Suleiman* wrote about their journey and life as slaves. *Abolitionists* used these stories as evidence against slavery. Olaudah Equiano Ayuba Suleiman Diallo

6 STAGE ONE Slaves were obtained by: (1) Kidnapping (2) Trading
Slaves were held in prisons along the west coast of Africa. They were waiting to put on slaves ships.

7 STAGE TWO: THE MIDDLE PASSAGE
Ships sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. The journey took 8-10 weeks Some Africans tried to jump ship, refused to eat and rebelled.

8 STAGE THREE Africans would be sold at auctions in the Americas.
The ships’ captains would use the money to buy raw materials: sugar, spices or tobacco.
