2  Slavery had existed in Africa for centuries.  African Muslims used non-Muslim POWs as slaves  About 17 million were transported to Northern Africa or Southwest Asia. SLAVERY IN AFRICA

3  When Europeans colonized the Americas, Sugar plantations, tobacco farms, and gold mines needed a large amount of workers.  They were going to use the Natives  Most Native Americans had died from disease WHY DID THE AMERICAS NEED SLAVES?

4  Africans had already been exposed to European diseases and wouldn’t die as quickly as the Natives did.  Africans had farming experience.  Africans were less likely to escape  Skin color -  New land - ADVANTAGES OF USING AFRICANS

5  Atlantic Slave Trade: the buying & selling of Africans to work in the Americas beginning in the 1500s  By the time the slave trade ended in 1870, 9.5 million slaves had been imported to the Americas.  40% of those went to Brazil  40% of those went to the Caribbean  5% of those went to North America THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE

6  African rulers & merchants would capture Africans and bring them to the ports to trade or sell. In return, rulers & merchants would get gold, guns, & other goods. AFRICAN COOPERATION

7  The routes and trading networks that slaves were traded along were called Triangular Trade. It was made up of 3 passages. TRIANGULAR TRADE

9  Outward Passage: Ran from Europe to Africa. Here manufactured goods were traded for slaves.  Middle Passage: Ran from Africa to the New World. Here slaves were traded for goods or crops like sugar, coffee, or tobacco.  Return Passage: Ran from the New World to Europe. Here goods are taken to Europe to be turned into manufactured goods. TRIANGULAR TRADE
