ARIZONA SILENT SERVICE MEMORIAL

The ASSM project was created by U.S. Navy Submarine Veterans who are members of Perch Base, USSVI located in Phoenix, AZ Perch Base ASSM

Arizona Silent Service Memorial The Arizona Silent Service Memorial was passed by Senate Bill 1401 on 23 April 2014 authorizing the memorial to be erected in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza. The bill was enacted into law by Arizona’s Governor on 24 April We are now seeking corporate and public sponsors to fund this project. The cost is estimated to be $450,000.

The approved site is in the open area adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial #30, next to the W. Jefferson Street parking lot. Note the ASSM logo lower center.

The proposed site is located by the sidewalk to the left and behind the gun barrels adjacent to the south parking lot on Jefferson St.

ASSM Design Concept

The evolution of the Arizona Silent Service Memorial began with the SOS (Save Our Sail) project

The SOS Project The intent of the original SOS project was to acquire the sail and rudder from the USS Phoenix SSN-702 and bring it back to Phoenix and erect it as a permanent memorial to those submarine sailors who served, are still serving and to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The USS Phoenix SSN-702

The local Perch Base Chapter of the United States Submarine Veterans built this 1/15 scale model of the USS Phoenix SSN-702 to support the SOS project.

The SOS Project Perch Base abandoned the SOS Project because of the uncertainty of the availability of the sail, the projected cost estimates related to completing and maintaining the memorial site and other considerations.

The demise of the SOS project led to the conception and birth of the ASSM

The purpose of the memorial is to honor all submariners who have served or are still serving in the 'silent service' of the United States Navy.

After 25 years of service, the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) the first nuclear powered submarine was decommissioned in March On April 11, 1986, eighty-six years to the day after the birth of the Submarine Force, the historic submarine, Nautilus became a permanent part of the Submarine Force Museum.

Other submarine memorials include: The USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) Arco, Idaho

USS Drum SS-228 Mobile, AL

National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona USS Perch SS-176 Memorial Perch Base USSVI Memorial Site

USS Oklahoma City SSN-723 making an emergency surface
