The Giant Panda Aiburopus Melanoleucus

Fertilization The panda reproduces sexually The panda carries it’s babies in it’s womb so it’s internal The panda has a delay before the embryo implantation (before it becomes pregnant)

Offspring Normally has 2 offspring The cubs are usually 5 oz.

Incubation Period Lasts 4-5 months Reproduces every 2 years

Mating Rituals The females will use scent-marking (rubbing bums against trees and rocks) to attract mates Male pandas will compete for the female The female only wants to have a baby for 2-5 days so the male will have to wait to “make his move”

Maturity The female panda reaches maturity between the ages of years But will only be able to mate days in between mid-March and mid-May

Parenting The males leave after mating The mother will only mother one of her two cubs the other she will abandon Carries cub everywhere for the first few weeks The cub will stay with the mother for 18 months

Life Span In the zoo panda’s live to about 30 years In the wild they live to an estimated less than 20 years!
