B is for…Barn Quilts Starting summer of 2005, visitors to Sac County, Iowa began seeing decorative quilt blocks on historic barns and corncribs all around the county. In 2006 there were 55 barn quilts located in Sac County, Iowa.

C is for…corn IOWA’s corn production in 2011 was 2.33 billion bushels. Baby food, chewing gum, and dry cell batteries are products that are made with corn.

D is for…Des Moines Des Moines was founded in Des Moines is located in Polk County and is the capital city of IOWA.

E is for …Earthquakes Only 13 earthquake with epicenters in Iowa are known in historic times. The largest Iowa earthquake was near Davenport, Iowa in 1934.

F is for…Flathead Catfish Flathead Catfish are found in Iowa lakes, the Missouri and the Mississippi rivers. The Iowa state record fish was caught in Lake Ellis, Chariton, Iowa and weighed 81 pounds.

G is for…Geode Rocks The Geode was designated the offical rock of Iowa in Geode State Park,in Henry County, is named for the occurrence of the Geode.

H is for…Hitchcock Nature Center Hitchcock Nature Center is located in Honey Creek, Iowa. It is a 1,102 acre nature center with some of the largest prairie remnants in the state of Iowa.

I is for…IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY opened in There are approximately 28,000 students that go to IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY.

J is for jail The unique Squirrel Cage Jail is located in Council Bluffs. It served as the Pottawattamie County Jail from 1885 until 1969.

K is for… Knoxville Sprint Car Nationals The Sprint Car Nationals attract over 150 of the best cars, teams, and drivers in the world including racing fans from every state in the nation. Knoxville is the home of the Knoxville Raceway which has earned a solid reputation as the fastest half-mile dirt racetrack in the nation.

L is for… lake Manawa State Park Lake Manawa State Park includes 1,529 acres and has a 660 acre natural lake. Lake Manawa was formed during a flood in 1881.

M is for…Muscatine Muscatine is a city in Muscatine County, Iowa. The population was 22,886 in the 2010 census. The name Muscatine is believed by some to have been named after the Mascouten native American tribe.

N is for…Nibbelin barn John and Doris Nibble's barn was built in the 1840’s. The barn has been in the family for 95 years.

O is for…Oak Tree In 1961 Iowa’s government officially named the Oak tree to be Iowa’s state tree. They chose it because there were a lot of them in the state and it is good for providing shelter, food, and nesting cover for many animals and birds

P is for…Prairie Meadows Prairie Meadows is Iowa’s first horse racing facility. March 1, 1989 was the first day of racing at Prairie Meadows race track.

Q is for…Quasqueton,Iowa Quasqueton, the oldest town in Buchanan County, was first settled in The name was originally Quasquetuk which was named by the Indians that lived on the west side of the river. It means "swi ft running water".

R is for…Railroads Railroad transportation came to Iowa in the late 1840’s. Iowa had approximately 655 miles of track in operation by 1860 and 2,683 miles by 1870.

S is for…Jonas Salk Jonas Salk ( ) was a research physician who formulated a vaccine against the devastating disease, polio, at Iowa University. Poliomyelitis, also called infantile paralysis, had crippled thousands of children during an epidemic that hit the world during the 1940's and 1950's.

T is for… Toolesboro Indian Mounds These mounds are a group of seven Woodland culture burial mounds located in Wapello, Iowa. The mounds are on a bluff overlooking the Iowa River near where it joins the Mississippi River.

U is for…Underground Railroad There were more than 100 Iowans who helped with the Underground Railroad in Iowa. Some of the best-known Iowans who helped are Congressman Josiah B. Grinnell,Iowa and John Williamson,a free African-American living near Council Bluffs.

V is for…Villisca The Villisca, Iowa axe murders occurred on June 10, A small community in Villisca, Iowa awoke to find 8 of their own had been brutally murdered by someone with an axe during the middle of the night.

W is for…Wild Rose The Iowa Legislature designated the Wild Rose as the official Iowa state flower in The wild rose can grow up to 15 meters tall & it is also famous for its prickly stems.

X is for…Xavier High School Xavier High School is the 6 th largest and only Catholic High school located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The school opened on February 18,1963.

Y is for…Yale,Iowa Yale is a city in Guthrie County,Iowa. The population in the 2010 census was 246.

Z is for…Zoo Blank Park Zoo is located in Des Moines, Iowa. The Blank Park Zoo has over 800 furry friend animals living there.
